Chapter 1 – How to understand intelligence

Everyone has their own understanding of what intelligence is however to really understand intelligence you need to have an insight into what cognition is.
There are two types of cognition; the first is referred to as normal cognition which is the ability to retrieve knowledge from memory. The second type of cognition is known as metacognition and this is having the capacity to know whether you know something or not.
There must have been a time in your life where you have been asked a question that you know the answer to yet you cannot recall, this is sometimes referred to as the answer being on the tip of your tongue, and if someone were to give you an answer you would immediately know whether it was wrong or right. The easiest way to understand this is to think of cognition as knowing and metacognition knowing whether you know or not. Both can exist together but more often than not they don’t.
In what way does this affect intelligence?
Bearing in mind what we understand about cognition, how important is it and how does this affect the way in which we can improve ourselves? As there are two separate types of cognitive ability it stands to reason that there are different types of intelligence.
During the time spent learning your intelligence is gauged by your cognitive capabilities. This is great for some as they have no trouble producing all they know when tested, however for those who do not fare as well because
