How To Crochet - Karen Edwards

    Book Description

Crochet is a great hobby. If you’ve been looking to learn or if you know how but it’s been a while since you’ve done it, this is a great ebook for you. We discuss everything you need to know about yarn, hooks, and accessories to get you started. Then, you’ll learn all about the basic stitches and we’ll even walk you through some decorative stitches. Finally, we’ll give you a ton of patterns to help get you started.

    Introduction

Learning to crochet is a rewarding and relaxing hobby. You can make beautiful heirloom gifts such as table runners, beautiful lace edgings for pillow cases, doilies, and other delicate items. You can also make items that are more practical such as socks, baby booties, toys, blankets, sweaters, and other items of clothing. You can also make things to decorate your home with such as color coordinated afghans, hand made wash cloths, and even things for your kitchen like pot holders.

Crochet has an interesting history. It’s still called crochet by the French, Belgians, Italians, and those in Spanish speaking country. The word crochet comes from the word croche which is the middle French word for hook.

Annie Potter is one of the leading crochet experts in America. Her research shows that crochet was developed during the 16th century. In France it was referred to as crochet lace. In England it was called chain lace. Although it’s hard to say for sure, research also suggests that the art of crochet was most likely taken from a form of Chinese needlework. Once it reached Europe during the 18th century it was referred to as tambouring. That style of needlework included a frame to hold the fabric and fine thread. Eventually, the French got rid of the frame and began to do what we now know as crochet.

If you’ve ever heard of the Irish potato famine, then you probably know a little bit about Irish lace. Irish crochet literally saved the lives of people in Ireland during the potato famine in the mid 1800s. So, people pulled their children out of school and everyone in the family would crochet these delicate patterns in order to support their families. This method came to America as people began to immigrade. Others picked up the technique from their new Irish neighbors.

Now, there is virtually no end to the number of stitches and patterns that you can find for this hobby. In fact, there are some people who will disassemble old blankets or sweaters in order to reuse the yarn. Some people even use old plastic bags as a form of yarn. Once you learn the basics, there is almost no end to the creativity that you will find in crochet.

You can crochet in your own home or even find local groups. If you want to take lessons from more experienced crocheters, check out Meetup.com or contact your local yarn shop (yes there are yarn shops). You can find groups of men and women that meet regularly to crochet together.

Crocheting doesn’t have to take a lot of time. Yes, there are some patterns that can’t be done in a single day. However, there are an amazing number of patterns available for people who want to be able to complete projects over the course of a weekend.

Don’t give up if you find some of the stitches frustrating. Even basic stitches can take time to learn. It’s okay if you have to pull out your beginning work and start over. We all have pieces that we are less than proud of. Just keep practicing. Before you know it, you’ll be able to create beautiful crocheted pieces. Also, it’s important to note that you won’t necessarily like to make every pattern. You may love to make hats but hate making afghans. You may love afghans but hate making hats or other projects that require you to work on the round. It’s perfectly okay! We all have our preferences.

If you get stuck at any time in this ebook, you are encouraged to look at videos online. YouTube and other video sites have great tutorials that focus on the hands of the person making the stitch. Some people will even talk you through the technique. Also, check out your local library for books on crochet. There are lots of ways to explain stitches and ways to crochet. You’ll definitely be able to find a way that explains stitches in a way that you can understand.

Chapter 1 – Hooks and Other Tools

Of course, you can’t crochet without the right tools (although there is a really amazing video on YouTube that shows someone using their finger in order to crochet). In this first chapter, we will talk abou the different types of hooks and other tools that you need or may want that will help get you started in your new hobby. You may find that you become a hook collector. That’s okay! Many of us collect hooks. It’s not a bad thing because as you become more experienced you will discover that you may need more than one size of a hook because you have more than one project going at any given time.

    Let’s Talk About Hooks

Clearly, if you want to get started in crochet then you need to have hooks. The most common hooks available are aluminum hooks, wooden hooks, and plastic hooks. Aluminum hooks are the ones that most people start off with because they are inexpensive and long lasting. You can purchase an entire set of the most commonly used Boye hooks from Walmart usually for under $10. Buying hooks individually is also inexpensive. Individual aluminum hooks cost less then $2 each. Many people enjoy aluminum hooks because of how the yarn slides down the hook with very little effort. Since it’s aluminum, you don’t really have to worry about your yarn being snagged unless the hook has been damaged in some way. It takes a lot to damage an aluminum hook such as
