Go Wild

On just about every Greek restaurant menu you will find a dish called "horta".

You may have heard of it; horta has been the topic of intense media interest ever since the residents of the tiny Greek island of Ikaria revealed that they ate it by the bucket load. The Ikarians are renowned for their amazing health and longevity and horta is packed with antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals.

Horta simply means ‘greens’ and these are often picked in the wild.

Driving away from my home I’ll often spot elderly women bent over in the fields, their baskets brimming over with these wild greens. Many times, I’ll jump out of my car bursting with curiosity and just ask: What are they picking? What will they do with it? Folk love to share their knowledge… and their pickings and I’ll wander back to the car clutching armfuls of the stuff (hoping I’ve understood enough Greek to enable me to cook it!)

Often too, when I’m out driving, the car ahead will pull to a sudden stop by the side of the road and someone will emerge armed with a kitchen knife (always keep one in the car) before leaping into the adjacent field and homing in on their horta prize.

Gathering horta seems to be something of a national obsession. Children are taught to identify different types of wild greens, and it’s not unusual to see them playing ‘horta hunting games’ with their families.
