Camping 101! - Michael Hansen
Introduction
If you are being prodded by friends or family to go camping for the first time, whether it is adults or children who are trying to persuade you, there is no reason to freak out. Humans have been camping outdoors for millennia, and as we’ll demonstrate in the next chapters, humans have also developed very sophisticated gear for enjoying the great outdoors in relative comfort.
There is no need to jump in cold to a camping experience! In the next pages, we’ll give you some tips on how to prepare – right in your own house – for part of an outdoor camping experience.
If your friends or family are including hiking or climbing as part of the camping experience, we’ll give you some ideas on what to expect so that you can be better prepared – at least mentally – for that type of outdoor experience as well.
Both men and women, as well as children, get involved in the tasks around the campfire and in cooking meals during a camping trip. You might even say that there is role reversal during a camping trip. I mean that if it was woman's work
at home to provide and prepare all the food, you may find that the men in the family are all excited about taking charge when it comes to the camping trip. Let them do it, girls! Guys – this is your time to shine: If you catch a fish, cook it up as well; if you never grill at home simply because you don’t have the space, take over running the campfire and grill on a campout. Step up, guys! It’ll be great fun and you’ll all have plenty of war stories
to tell back home for years to come.
But all men, all women, and all children need to be aware of some safety tips while camping. Safety is everyone's job. Safety first, fun the rest of the time.
Let’s see first how you can ease into a first-ever camping trip – by doing certain things right at home for practice.
Chapter 1: Easing into It
In this chapter, it is all about:
How to get ready right at home for that first-time trip with more experienced campers
Do’s and don’ts of camping
Humans have done the equivalent of camping ever since there were humans! Nomadic peoples of Asia and Africa long ago mastered the art. Modern-day survivalists have had to master the art of camping and being out in the wild on their own, because after all, that is the point – surviving the wild.
If you are a city dweller or a suburbanite with no experience of a camper's life, you really don't know what you're missing! Very often, just one short hour's drive outside your urbanized suburb or your built-up big city, you can have the educational experience, and perhaps the spiritual one, that we call camping.
Spiritual? Buddha, Jesus and Mohammed spent time out in the forest, desert or in caves meditating. The absolute quiet and isolation they experienced could not be matched in any cities, even of their day. And look at the written and spiritual legacies they brought back from the isolation!
If you need a change from the hustle-bustle and constant noise of your
