About this ebook

When Kara's assigned to a threat case involving the governor, she finds herself fighting for her life against a rabid shifter, barely sure she'll make it back to the other side of the fence alive. Saved from a killing blow at the last second by a mysterious rider, she can't shake him from her mind.
When she realizes he's been following her, she learns there's more to him than meets the eye. Indeed, there's more to the case than she even imagined. He's a shifter, too. And he's got information that could blow the case wide open, if they evade the wrath of some very powerful people, and preserve their lives first.

A high-octane, urban fantasy and Curvy girl, Shifter Paranormal with romance elements

    ––––––––

Kara kicked out against the rabid werebeast, sending him and his mile long spittle flying against the alley wall. Fuck, he was huge. And heavy. She grunted with the effort as she fell to the hard cement. Son of a bitch. She'd barely gotten her bearings after the last little run in with their kind. Squeezing her eyes shut as the image of the human heart tacked to the congressman's door rose up in her consciousness, she forced them back open.

The medical examiner assured the heart had been dead a good long while, likely having been dug up from a grave, as disgusting as that was. But it was still a threat, and she'd braved the other side of the fence to find out who, exactly, had it out for the good congressman.

Not that she was a fan of the guy or anything. The laws he'd had implemented to control the shifters were Draconian at best. It was no surprise the shifter community was finally fighting back. No surprise at all. Question was, how was she going to get to the bottom of the case, and find the ringleader of the disgruntled beasties who'd been leaving bloody messages all over the city's official offices?

Rolling out of the wild-haired monstrosity's reach when it lunged for her again, Kara paced herself. Her training flooding back as second instinct. She'd fought the lab-mades before, but they rarely broke out beyond the fence, and they weren't much of a challenge when she got started serving them their asses.

This fucker was an entirely different thing. He was a predator. His animal blood taking over the man hidden somewhere within while the beast was roused. Shifters scared the shit out of Kara, truth be told. And she was beginning to have second thoughts about having taken the job. She wasn't equipped like the other agents. Hell, they had a shifter on staff that was definitely a better pick for the case.

Fucking bureaucratic red tape screwed shit like this up every time.

The good cases always went to the department's favorites, but since Kara needed the money... it was what it was. Better to stop her internal bitching.

Her fingers closed around the ritual dagger protruding from her ankle holster, and she drove the ritual blade deep into the beast's hind paw. Its yelps pulsed through her in waves, but she fought the compassionate animal lover within. This big boy wasn't your average four-legged. He was a little higher up the food chain, and it was either him or her, right now.

Tightening her grip on the dagger's handle, Kara blinked past the glow beaming off of the imbued stones lining its crimson middle. The department really needed to adjust the settings on these things. When you're in a flipping battle, having the advantage of sight is, well, essential.

Catching sight of a striking paw a second too late, Kara attempted to duck out of his way but ended up running right into the attack. Gritting her teeth under the lightning burst of pain pervading her thigh, she cried out, instantly regretting it. Shit. She didn't even want to look at the damage he'd just done. She felt all five of those razor sharp claws slice through her flesh.

She'd be gushing blood any second.

Not a good thing in shifter territory. Tucking the blade back in its holster, she hobbled away from the beast's shadow. Her eyes took a minute readjusting to the balance of light and dark aided by the red, neon sign beaming off of the bar she'd found him in.

He'd been a blue-eyed demon, for sure. Real lady killer. And he'd been just as dumb as most of the fellows who set eyes on a woman and believe she's offering something by asking a bloke to step outside with her.

Kara cursed her lost advantage now.

She'd thrown herself painfully into the flirty subtleties of it all. Had him where she'd wanted him with the element of surprise. But that edge was long gone. Biting her lip, she wrinkled her nose at the scent of her own blood and resolved to do a round house kick, gimp style. With the right amount of momentum, she could still knock his lights out.

Shame it had to come to this.

She'd only wanted to ask a few questions. This brawny, alley trash wasn't the friggin' ringleader by any stretch. But he'd wanted to get physical. Show her who's boss. You know the type. His sort needed a firm sort of return message, the variation that ended in you handing them their asses.

Her opponent's growl sent the hairs of her arm on their ends, fully erect and alert. She'd long learned how to push past fear, though. If she hadn't figured that out by now, she was in the wrong line of business.

Nearly swallowing her heart when he stopped toying with her and lunged, she positioned herself as securely as she could, still not daring to look at her thigh though she could feel the blood pouring out through her leggings. Her heart thudded her ears as she waited for the right moment to swing out, and she prayed to any gods that would hear that her injured leg held up when she kicked out.

She only needed to catch him in the eyes. Even one eye would do it.

Trembling a little with the effort, Kara waited for that golden moment. The one that made her blood sing, and with a battle cry she was sure would draw unwanted attention, she secured her footing as best she could and swung out with her good leg, catching the shifter square in the jaw.

    Shit.

The eye. She needed to get the eye.

Kara watched with her heart in her throat as her opponent shook off the blow and set those icy, blue eyes on her, the menace in them unmistakable. There went that. She'd have to kill him. And she'd have to do it nearly blind because the ritual blade was set on high beams when this particular highway didn't require it.

    Fuck.

Fumbling to grab her dagger as the beast approached, slinking closer like a predator sure of his kill, her fingers tightened around the hilt, and she pulled it out, swinging it madly when its light created a white-out of epic proportions in the open alleyway.

Stars filled her eyes when the beast threw out its paw with confusion and caught her waist, and she cried out in pain and frustration. Fuck, that hurt. But at least it wasn't as deep as before.
