    Janette stepped off the escalator and hurried to follow the crowd out of L’Enfant Plaza Station. Already, she couldn’t keep herself from grinning. Already, Washington, D.C. was packed with women—and people of all genders—carrying signs, wearing clear backpacks, and sporting pink, hand-knitted pussy hats.

    Janette’s own hat, crammed over her thick, curly hair, was clumsy and a bit lopsided. She’d taught herself to knit from YouTube videos just so she could make her own pussy hat for the march. But, looking around, she felt that she fit right in. Some people had hats that were obviously machine-made, some hats in fleece, some hats that were knitted but not in pink… it didn’t matter. They all knew they were together.

    The crowd was heading up toward Independence Avenue, and Janette walked with them. She was later than she’d wanted to be, because the Metro in College Park had been so packed she hadn’t been able to get on the first train. Now she was wondering if she would get to see any of the rally. She’d been pretty excited about getting a glimpse of the Indigo Girls live.
