There is nothing more romantic than Italian food.

I come from a huge Italian family. When I say huge, I mean huge. Unfortunately, the majority of my family no longer lives in Italy and very few remember living there before coming to the United States. Only my grandmother can truly remember life in Italy and the authentic Italian recipes that her mother taught her as a little girl.
Now, I’ll never claim to be a cook. In fact, as a child when my grandmother wanted to teach me the recipes that were passed down through her family, I usually found one excuse or another to duck out of the kitchen. As I’ve grown up, however, I realize how truly special it is to have the opportunity to spend that time with my grandmother as well as make a record of those authentic family recipes.
There are many families out there who keep their family recipes close, locked away like treasures that only immediate family can access. My grandmother, however, believes that good food is a source of love and EVERYONE deserves to experience love. So, when she asked if we could make a book out of the recipes she was teaching me, I couldn’t wait to get started!
It took us a while to get through all of these authentic Italian recipes, but I have to tell you that they are more than worth it! THESE are the recipes that will make you a star at the dinner table. THESE are the recipes that will put smiles on faces. THESE are the recipes that will hopefully bring your family together the way that they have brought mine together.

When you cook Italian food on a budget it can be difficult to purchase the best ingredients. The truth is, though, that the quality of your ingredients is what makes the quality of your meal. So, if you are cooking on a budget, try to cut out the sides, the wines, the additions to the meal instead of cutting on the basic ingredients themselves.
With that said, let’s take a look at some of the most often used ingredients in authentic Italian cooking!
Parmigiano-Reggiano – If your recipe calls for parmesan, ALWAYS use Parmigiano-Reggiano and ALWAYS use a block that you grate right before using.
Extra virgin olive oil – Use nothing else!
Meat broth – This is NOT the same as stock or anything other than meat broth! Our flavors just won’t turn out the same without using authentic meat broth.
Real herbs – Avoid
