Slow Cooker Cookbook - Jean Reed
INTRODUCTION
Slow cookers are one of the best friends that a busy person can have. If you enjoy good food, but don’t always have the time to spend hours in the kitchen, then slow cookers are the answer to your problem. Imagine how much easier life is when you can just throw all the ingredients into the slow cooker and go to work. When you get home, you have an amazing meal ready to eat.
Are you ready to eat great meals and spend less time prepping in the kitchen? Great! You’re going to learn 101 of the best slow cooker recipes.
CHAPTER 1 – WHY USE A SLOW COOKER
In the introduction, we told you how using a slow cooker can make your work day easier. You just throw your ingredients into the slow cooker, turn it on, and go to work. When you get home, you’ll have a great meal waiting for you. In this day and age where we seem to have less and less time, slow cooking can be a sanity saver!
It’s not just about making your work day easier, either. If you’re a stay at home parent, a slow cooker can still help! You can cut down the time you spend in the kitchen and focus on other projects.
Slow cookers are also great for people who like to participate in once a month cooking or who like to meal prep for an entire week. You can put all of your ingredients into freezer bags and freeze until you are ready to put them into your slow cooker. Even better, you can use your slow cooker to make a double or triple portion of your recipe. Then, you can freeze the extra to have a quick and easy meal later in the month.
Slow cookers aren’t just for pot roasts. You can use your slow cooker for breakfast, lunch, or dinner. It’s great for soups, appetizers, and even desserts!
Slow cookers are especially great in the spring and summer. There’s no need to heat up your entire house to make a meal. This can help you save on your electric bill. Your air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard to cool down your house.
Slow cookers are great for your grocery bill. It’s not just changing the way that you cook the food. Since slow cookers are made to cook foods for a longer period of time, you can buy cheaper cuts of meat. They will be tender and tasty because they were cooked slowly at a lower temperature.
Did you know that cooking with a slow cooker may help you lose weight or at least eat healthier? It’s true. Since slow cookers operate with a lid on them, they retain moisture as they cook. So, as long as you put in plenty of liquid in the beginning, there’s no need for you to add a lot of oil. Less fat in your food is generally better for you.
Using a slow cooker can also bring out the best flavor in your food. This is because there’s no rush in cooking it. The lower temperature and the longer time helps all of the flavors really come to life.
You can make just about anything in your slow cooker. If you can dream it up, there’s probably someone who has already come up with a slow cooker recipe for it. There are also websites out there that explain hwo to convert stove or oven time to slow cooker time. You can make your own recipes.
Cooking in a slow cooker has another health benefit. It helps your recipes retain more of the vitamins and minerals than stove top cooking. There’s no boiling out the good stuff from your vegetables.
CHAPTER 2 - SOUPS
Soups are good all year around! In the summer, they are perfect because they are light and fast to make. When you’re using your slow cooker, there’s no heating up the kitchen. In the winter and fall, soups are great because they help keep us warm. They make great appetizers and main dishes.
Soups are also a great way to lose weight and get plenty of vegetables! They are inexpensive. This makes it easy to get healthy and enjoy it. In this chapter, you’re going to find some amazing soups to add to your recipe collection.
1 - Cabbage and Sweet Potato Soup
I love cabbage. It’s just so good for you. It’s also really, really cheap. Cabbage can help you lose weight because it can help clear out your tummy and your intestines. It’s also extremely versatile. It is one of my favorite foods to work with.
Cabbage and Sweet Potato Soup[1]
Ingredients:
4 sweet potatoes, peeled and chopped (Don’t want to peel and chop? No problem! You can use 2 cans of sweet potatoes, drained and rinsed.)
1 head of cabbage, coarsely chopped
2 c. baby carrots
2 lbs. kielbasa, sliced
1 t. salt
1 t. dried thume
1 t. dried rosemary
½ t. black pepper
1 c. dry white wine
6 c. low sodium chicken broth (I use chicken bouillon granules.)
Metro:
This is super easy. Place your veggies into the slow cooker. Next, add the kielbasa sausage. Sprink;e this with your seasonings. Add your wine and broth. Cook on low until your sweet potatoes are done (if you’re not using canned sweet potatoes). On low, it takes about six hours. You can freeze what you don’t eat for an easy meal
