Easy Soapmaking for Beginners - Margaret Lowe
1. INTRODUCTION
Have you ever read the labels on health and grooming products? Then you know that it can be very difficult to find a product that doesn’t contain a long list of scary-sounding synthetic chemical ingredients. Indeed, sometimes, the easiest and most affordable way to ensure that the products we use are safe and natural—everything from laundry detergent to body lotion to deodorant to toilet scrub—is to make them ourselves. And I’ve found that doing so has turned out to be both convenient and fun.
Along this vein, soapmaking is a favorite hobby of mine. It’s much easier than it sounds and produces a creation that is a pleasure to use and to give away as gifts. I love that I don’t have to worry about any weird skin reactions, since I know exactly which ingredients are going into my soap, and I can tailor the ingredients to my specific skin issues and tastes. There are dozens of ways to get creative in your soapmaking—you can use different molds, fragrances, and colors. You can add herbs and flower petals, experiment with ingredients, and create gorgeous layers and patterns. The sky is the limit! And, for me, the process itself is really relaxing and enjoyable.
WHAT IS SOAP?
All bar soaps are made using a couple of base ingredients. Lye is one of the essential ingredients for any soap. When buying lye, be sure that it contains 100% sodium hydroxide and nothing else. Oil is the other essential soap ingredient. Examples of great soapmaking oils include sweet almond oil, avocado oil, apricot kernel oil, canola oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, castor oil, jojoba oil, olive oil, hazelnut
