Organize Your Home in Five Days - Nancy Brooks
Introduction
Clutter is one of the most problematic issues in every home, office or space. This is because clutter has the tendency to get out of control, and few of us are prepared or equipped to deal with it. Worse, as clutter becomes more and more entrenched in our spaces, we often choose to ignore them, procrastinate on acting on them and soon we become immune to its presence.
An entire industry has been born out of the need to declutter, life coaches, home organizers, pickers, movers and even reality shows are very popular and highly in demand to finally solve this pressing issue. However, decluttering is not only meant to organize your space, but also to save you money. If you would rather do the decluttering yourself, then life hacks are for you.
This book presents you with several key ingredients and guiding principles used by organizing experts. Each of these components is translated into this book’s almost 100 life hacks, decluttering rules, tips, and recommendations. They are simple yet creative, useful but inexpensive and most importantly, you can do all of them yourself.
Inside you will learn about:
Principles for decluttering
Lifehacks for every major room of the home
Lifehacks for the office
Lifehacks for other spaces
The 5 day plan
Hidden clutter
DIY declutter projects
House rules for all ages
Declutter list of 7
Lifehacks for interior designing
The art of Feng Shui
Decluttering is best done at your own pace, but if you can commit at least five days, this book also has a five-day plan that specifies which room to take care of first, what supplies you need, what rules you need in place and even what boxes you need to be labeled. It does not have to be five days straight; you can apply the plan in your free time.

How to organize, store and dispose
The benefits of a clutter-free space in your mind, body and spirit
The principle of Respect for Space
Organizing, Storing & Disposing
There are three main ingredients for every decluttering endeavor: organizing, storing and disposing of. Organizing is putting together items that belong to a particular category. Each category must then be stored in designated areas. Disposing of can be done through selling, donating or just throwing away. However, these three steps are easier said than done; you may be at a loss on how to organize because of the volume, how to store because of the lack of space or how to dispose of because of the value of the clutter.
Let these three decluttering principles guide you in every step of the way:
One at a time.
Boxes for everything.
Designated area.
Your overall goal should be to a clutter-free life; this is a great, ongoing and long-term task. This goal will not be completed overnight; instead, it is a lifestyle change. The key to this principle is that you should pace yourself by decluttering one step at a time or, in this case, one item at a time. You can translate this principle into several applications:
Life hacks:
One trash bag at a time. Buy a pack of 10-20 pieces of medium sized trash bags. Give yourself a month to use up the pack by filling in and disposing of one bag a day.
One donation a day. If you find it difficult to schedule a one-day general cleaning, then you can declutter one item a day. Within a year, that is at least 365 items removed from your house.
One square per day. Instead of categorizing your house per room, try dividing it into a grid. Divide the entire home, including the outside area, into a 5 x 5 grid; those are 25 squares that you can schedule in a month. Give yourself five days rest time.
Boxes are an effective way to force a decision out of you. Instead of having to mull and think over and over and risk excuses or cheating, having a box with specific purposes can help you arrive at a decision fast. On top of that, boxes can create immediate relief once you put clutter inside, when the clutter is out of your sight, you can also put it out of your mind.
Lifehacks:
Four-box method. On the communal disposal area, place four boxes, one for keeping, for relocating, for selling or donating and for disposing of. Instead of equal sized boxes, make the Keep box smallest and the Sale or Dispose bag the largest. List items as you throw them, especially in the Keep, Relocate, and Sell boxes.
Box now declutter after. A reverse of most boxing methods and especially useful for busy people. Put all clutter, regardless of source, category or location into several boxes. Open one box at least once a week and deal with the contents.
One for all and all for one. Give each member of the house a particular assignment, task, clutter category or area to declutter. Create a communal disposal area and have the entire family take rounds in each field to check for progress and avoid cheating.
Establish discipline in yourself by determining a designated place for every item in the home. When you know which things belongs to which area, then you will have an easier time to organize and store them. When you have these assigned locations, you will know that you cannot put anything that does not belong in that category and if an item does not have a designated space inside the home, then its clutter
