About this ebook

This book seeks to change lives by inspiring a new way of thinking about what it takes to renew and sustain health: that people are not likely to make significant lifestyle changes on their own, that some level of intervention is required, that people in leadership positions, whether in business, church, hospitals or community organizations, have the best opportunity, and some would argue responsibility, to initiate the intervention. The type of intervention is extremely important, given the history of various strategies that have proven to be largely ineffective. This book introduces you to the "Leader's Playbook" which you can use to help people discover activities, support, friends, and places that are fun and rewarding. The creation of the experience becomes then the major catalyst for change. How does a leader go about helping people find the kinds of experiences that they enjoy and that will improve their health?

    FOREWORD

Bob Coleman, a leader in the wellness industry, knows about the unhealthy American lifestyle that has led to myriad health problems in our country. Through his firm’s specialized design of health and wellness facilities over the last 40 years, he has observed the changes brought about by our fast-paced lifestyles. The need for corporate and community wellness centers is an outgrowth of too much fast food, too little sleep and exercise, stressful jobs, and unrewarding relationships. These poor habits are common in the pursuit of the American dream, with our desire for bigger homes, newer cars, and the latest technological gadgets. As we chase this perpetually moving target of riches, our blood pressures are soaring, glucose levels and A1C are rising, and our rates of obesity and diabetes are skyrocketing.

Since the mid-1980s, federal, state, and local governments (along with local health departments and non-profit agencies) have instituted program after program in an attempt to stem the rising tide of obesity. Not only have the millions of dollars targeted on the promotion of healthy lifestyles failed to stop the rise in harmful habits, poor health behaviors have continued to increase over the past 30 years. We are a nation suffering from an epidemic of physical inactivity.

Bob Coleman has a wide range of experience in community affairs. He knows, firsthand, about the vast array of efforts to improve our citizens’ health and to eradicate disease directly related to unhealthy lifestyles. He knows what works and what does not. Happily, he has seen successful leaders in various sectors of society bring about change with charisma and insights. A successful health promotion agenda can only work when it is led by someone with energy and vision.

In his book, Bob includes a description of successful programs and the effective leaders responsible for them. He invited those leaders to tell their stories. Not only are the accounts interesting in themselves, there is much to learn from each about leadership strategies.

Bob Coleman spearheads the effort with the energy of a man several decades younger. I have experienced few who give as much to the community. He continues a lifelong quest to enhance society and make everyone’s life richer and healthier. It has been my good fortune to get to know him.

    PREFACE

We have a health crisis in this country and it is time to act. Fifty percent of our population is either diabetic or pre-diabetic¹; 62% are either obese or overweight²; and a shocking 86% of our health care costs go to treating chronic disease³, much of which is preventable.

It is not like we aren’t trying. There are tons of self-help books telling us how to lose weight, exercise, and eat better. We pay people to stop smoking, shed pounds, and submit to health screenings. We have health fairs and biggest loser contests; we track our steps with our watch or smart phone.

If you follow any of the Corporate Wellness discussion groups on LinkedIn, you know of the constant debate about the return on investment (ROI) of various wellness programs. Vendors are on one side of the argument, experts on the other. The truth is, none of these programs work because they do not sustain
