About this ebook
Screams without explanation. A dead boarder. An investigator knows something is off about the case…
When beautiful and mysterious Rebecca is found murdered in her extended-stay suite, the Rockport police are baffled by the apparent senseless brutality of the crime. The only clue to what happened to the young woman appears to be the way she died—a blow to the back of her head, with a baseball bat or golf club.
Detective Inspector Richard Watson must now follow a confusing trail of clues that seem to lead in every direction, even when exhaustion sets in and his mind plays tricks on him. Like the great Sherlock Holmes, he must entice the clues out of thin air!
What the detective and his assistant find is shocking, but the most shocking thing of all is what happens when a detective finally puts together the unlikeliest of clues. Only his long-suffering assistant can help him now.
What happened to Rebecca Jones—was she a victim of an abusive ex-husband or was something more sinister the cause for her death?
Can the detective find a way to put together the seemingly senseless clues in time to solve the case once and for all?
The Case of the Hated Body is a spine-tingling race through multiple suspects, each with a motive for killing the young woman. As each is cleared, join the detective as he searches for the truth of what happened that dreadful night…but don’t read it alone in the dark!
This is a standalone cozy mystery novella.

CHAPTER ONE
THE HOUSEKEEPERS
THE HOUSEKEEPERS
W hat did I do to deserve this place?
Jessica Manland sighed, smiling dreamily, looking across the valley at her home. It must have been something good, whatever it was.
Manland mansion stood in the middle of beautiful mountains in the heart of Rockport, Massachusetts. It was built in 1892 by Lord Turing, who settled in Rockport. Many generations later, Mr. and Mrs. Manland had acquired the property. Jessica Manland loved it. The elegant Victorian house was truly magnificent, tranquil and ageless in the dreamy landscape.
All this, and David, and a successful business too?
She shook her head, grinning. Sometimes it all seemed simply too idyllic. Manland mansion was not just their home – it was also their source of income. Manland Mansion was the main attraction in the area, and from it David and Jessica ran a thriving hotel, The Rockport Heights.
Most people who stayed there fell in love with Manland Mansion. Even the walls had a hint of nostalgia where huge ancestral portraits hung in their gloom. David and Jessica had refurbished it, but left much of it exactly as it was. The artistic aura of the place reminded people of a past life, where Victorian people had cherished the essence of art and culture.
David Manland spent his time gardening, but he also enjoyed buying fruits and vegetables from the farmer's market in the village further down the hill. Travelers and other people often stayed at Rockport Heights for a few months. There was a rule that the Manlands didn’t let anybody stay for over six months in a stretch. One had to leave before the seventh month. However, they could come back the very next week to renew their stay. The little world that the Manlands had created was tranquil and idyllic.
Jessica Manland sighed and walked back to the house. She reached the garden and looked about for David, surprised not to see him there. As she crossed the garden to the house, she noticed the roses she had planted were wilting.
Oh, dear,
she said under her breath. She reached for the watering can that was lying in the path. David must have left it there. David?
She bent over to check the roots were not exposed, and as she did so, she heard a faint cry coming from somewhere. She ignored it at first, stretching her back and surveying the place. The plush garden stretched out from the front door and down the hill, the beds of irises and roses flanking a green lawn. At this time of day, the sun’s rays caught the fountain, emerging from the cool shadows. The marble fountain was always full of water, the scent of wet stone mixing with the sweet scent of blossoms.
Jessica wiped her forehead with the back of her hand and again she heard a sound, but this time it was very loud and shrill. A definite scream.
What on earth?
The cry seemed to come from the upper room where they had a guest: Rebecca Jones. Without waiting a minute, Jessica ran toward Rebecca’s room. Upon reaching the door, Jessica knocked loudly, consumed with a growing sense of alarm.
Rebecca opened the door, smiling.
Hello, Mrs. Manland! Did you need to fetch something?
Jessica blinked. No, I didn't,
she said hesitantly. I just heard a sound coming from your room.
What sound?
she asked, as if nothing had happened and she had no idea what Jessica was talking about.
I just heard a scream,
Jessica insisted, shaken, It sounded like it came from your room. I just wanted to make sure that you are okay.
Oh,
the woman blinked, surprised. Well, I'm fine. Could the noise you heard have come from somewhere else? I was just here on my own, reading.
She showed her the book and the coffee mug that rested peacefully on the wooden coffee table.
Jessica looked around, feeing distinctly bewildered. She stared around the room. Like the others, it was a reminder of the Victorian era, with beautiful paintings and chandeliers. There was not a hint of any disturbance.
Jessica and Rebecca stood in the hallway exchanging embarrassed smiles.
Well, if you need anything, please feel free to contact me,
said Jessica.
Oh I will. And thank you for coming to check on me – I appreciate your concern,
said Rebecca calmly.
Jessica left, feeling even more unsettled than when she had heard the noise. She walked slowly, unable to stop herself from listening out for noises, but nothing
