Eve didn’t expect her entire life to change when she applied to be a personal assistant. All she wanted, and needed was a fresh start and to put the past behind her.

    Chapter One

Eve rolled her eyes to the back of her head and adjusted in the seat of her car, settling in for the lecture. She regretted accepted the video call from her mother instead of just calling her on Sunday as per their usual routine.

I don’t know why in the world you’d want to meet any man online. Especially, not after your last disaster. You ran clear across the country to be rid of a man, now this? It’s dangerous. Don’t you watch the news? Her mother’s brown eyes glared back at her from the video app on her phone. A look she’d seen plenty of times as a child.

If I paid attention to the news I wouldn’t go for a jog, shopping at Walmart, or heck even sit in my apartment. People get murdered from stray bullets sitting in their own homes. Eve sighed, deciding to ignore the first part of her mother’s statement. She glanced at the men and women walking in and out of the upscale lounge she’d parked in front of.

Are you getting smart with me?

Eve had no doubt her mother’s arms were crossed even though she couldn’t see them due to how close her mother had the phone to her face. With the view that close Eve noticed a few extra lines in the corner of her mother’s eyes, other than that to onlookers her true age remained a mystery.

    No ma’am.

Good. The scowl lessoned. Now just be careful and I love you.

I love you too. Eve blew a kiss and ended the video chat.

It’s now or never, she said as encouragement to herself as her mind drifted to a few weeks earlier.

Blinking…rapid paced blinking away the madness happing to her was the best Eve could do. Her lids opened and closed and yet she still sat on the opposite side of her supervisor’s desk. This could not be happening.

I’m sorry, but because of your exemplary record up until now. Mr. Adams, her porkly supervisor glared at her over the rim of his glasses before pushing them back up on his face. I think sending you off with a letter of reference is adequate.

Eve’s mouth dropped open. She’d been fired.

I’m not sure I understand. She shook her head in protest.

Friday, you admitted to staying late. As you know overtime hasn’t been approved. That’s stealing from the company. Now, out of fairness you will receive an extra two weeks pay, but that’s the best I can do. Please return to your desk and gather your things. Security will be waiting for you. Mr. Adams’s face spread into a small smirk.

Reality set in. The jerk was in a on the scam with Rick, both were skimming off the top of the account from the Gideon account. At this point there was nothing she could do. She’d brought it to the person who had immediate access to the account to prove anything and there was no doubt he erased all of the proof.

Eve fumed on the inside. Doing good had once again failed her. When she discovered the small amounts missing off the Gideon account each month she should have left it alone. One percent off of an account for several months didn’t seem like much, except when the account was worth a billion dollars. That was the reason she’d stayed late. She wanted to double check her numbers before bringing the information to light.

Well you did a good job of that, didn’t you?

All it left her with was being without a job.

Eve slowly stood from her chair and walked out Mr. Adams’s office. On the other side of the building, waiting by her desk stood a security guard. She wouldn’t give him the satisfaction of walking her out. Instead of continuing straight, she turned left and ducked out the door to the stairs.

Eve shook off the memory. Today was a new day. She grabbed her clutch purse from out the passenger seat and exited the car.

Inside the lounge people mingled about oblivious to a woman on the verge of having a nervous breakdown walking towards the bar. Eve wanted a fresh start and here it was.

Out of all the bars she decided to go to this one had to be packed on a Tuesday.

Is this seat taken? Eve spoke above the loud music into the broad back of a dark haired man. He wore a fitted, pinstriped shirt that made it easy to figure out the sculpted silhouette beneath. His expensive-looking black navy jacket draped over the back of his chair.

Sitting at home in a depressed state the last few days hadn’t done her any good so she made herself up and decided to get a drink—fearful that if she drank at home she might end up in a stupor and more depressed than she already was.

His sleeves were rolled up, showing a watch she no doubt couldn’t afford. The man glanced at her with a broad smile. And here I was thinking I’d been stood up.

Eve nearly choked on the air she breathed. The photos of this man had done him no justice. His square jaw and blue-gray eyes were meant for the pages of a magazine and not on some interracial dating website.

Blake? The answer was obvious but it was all she could muster.

In the flesh. He gave her the slow once over starting with her shoes and back up to her face. Eve blushed at his open observation. You look amazing. Lucy.

Eve returned a big cheesy grin at the fake name she used for her profile. The name was a play-off of her own. Eve supposedly being the first woman while scientist credit the remains of a female as being much older than the supposed Garden of Eden and dubbed her Lucy.

Thank you. She accepted the chair he held out for her. Eve let out a small sigh of relief. She’d made the right decision in meeting up with him. He’d be perfect.

    Chapter Two

The harsh pounding in Blake’s head woke him. He opened his eyes, squinted in blinding pain, and saw nothing but blurry confusion. The room swam around him, his stomach pitched, and he went perfectly still, concentrating on not being sick.

When the rolling of his stomach subsided to mere queasiness, he put his efforts to focusing. Something white was in his line of vision, something with lace. Blake blinked twice until the fuzziness cleared and the object took form. He realized it was a bra.

    He froze, staring in incomprehension.

His brain seemed a vast wasteland, and the more he tried to think, the more it pulsed.

While Blake stared at the bra, trying to figure out what the hell it was doing in his bedroom, a warm body next to him stirred.

Alarm skittered through him, and he froze. His heart punched into his throat, and slowly, so slowly it seemed to take forever, Blake turned his head.

He found himself staring into a beautiful brown skinned woman.

Good God! She clung to him like a limpet, her smooth brown arm over his chest, her small hand fisted, her fingers laced into his chest hair with a secure hold. Her head was practically in his armpit, her nose smooshed up into his side, and he could have sworn he felt her warm breath on his left nipple.

A ripple of sizzling awareness rode through his muscles, starting at his toes and ending with a crescendo in his already befuddled brain.

Damn, but the woman was smiling even in her sleep. A small, sexy, inviting smile.

What the hell was she dreaming about?

Her rich black hair, impossibly long and thick, trailed down her back, over her shoulder, and onto him. It teased the arm he had holding her securely. Blake choked.

    What had he done?

Like a small cat, the woman stirred again, stretching and making a sweet, feminine sound of awakening that caused all Blake’s most sensitive body parts to clench in response.

It was at that moment that Blake realized her warm bare thigh was over his lap, rubbing against him.

    He was stunned, breathless, appalled.

He was rock hard and getting harder by the second.

The woman blinked her sleepy eyes open and looked at him. For a long moment neither of them moved. Blake thought her big brown eyes incredible, even while she looked drowsy, sweet and…happy to see him.

Heat shimmered between them. As he looked on, she blushed a little but didn’t look away. Even when his cock rose up and nudged her inner thigh, flexing against his will, she didn’t move.

He had to say something. Hi.

Her lashes drifted down and she looked at his chest. Morning light blazed through the open drapes over the window, leaving long pale sunbeams slanting across the bed, over their bodies.

She turned her face, nuzzling him, and one selective beam caught the clean line of her jaw, her small upturned nose, and full lips. It glinted on her thick lashes and in her dark, mysterious eyes.

At that moment, Blake thought she was about the prettiest thing he’d ever seen.

But what the hell was she doing in bed with him?

She smiled up at him, a smile of awareness, of complete and utter awe. You are so warm.

An inferno. Blake closed his eyes, hoping that by not seeing her, he could distance himself enough to figure out what to do.

Her fingertips drifted across his brow, riffled through his hair. Are you all right? I suppose you have a hangover.

He remembered sitting at the bar on the corner guzzling one shot after another. Way too
