John Decides to Cheat: Chapter 1
John was a very lazy boy who did not like to study and rarely did his homework. His favourite activities included playing football, watching television, playing on his computer (especially chatting on the internet to his friends when they were out of town) and listening to pop music on his iPod.
His parents did not seem to care about his study or other activities when he was in junior classes, but all of a sudden as he entered senior classes, they expected him to do well in his examinations. His father was a businessman and his mother was a teacher. They wanted John to become a doctor. John often told his parents that he too wanted to be a doctor but now he realised that this was quite impossible for him. For some time he had been hiding his progress reports, not telling his parents the truth about his studies. The admission test for medical school was coming soon; his parents expected him to pass it easily.
His mother, who had gone out shopping, had told him to study in his room; however, after only twenty minutes, he had gone into the television room instead to watch his favourite movie, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (part 2). Just as the film finished, his mother arrived, and he opened the door to let her in.
How's your study going?
she asked John.
Wonderfully well,
John replied untruthfully. Immediately he felt guilty so he added, I'm going to study all night as well to make sure I pass.
His mother was very pleased to hear this and gave him a hug. John now felt that he had to keep his promise, so he did try very hard to study that night. He even opened his textbooks and notebooks to begin his hard attempt at studying, but it proved to be an impossible task. John had never studied late at night in his entire life; his eyes gradually became heavy with sleep. When he awoke in the morning – the alarm had been set at 7 o'clock – he was in despair. To make matters worse, his father had just arrived home from his business trip abroad. He greeted his son warmly before bringing up the awkward subject.
Your mother tells me you've been studying all day and all night too – trying for first position, eh? That's my boy! But even if you only pass, I won't mind.
John smiled nervously. Being reminded about the test, John started thinking about how he could ever pass it. There seemed to be only one possible way to pass – cheating.
After much hard thinking, he came up with a crazy idea. Normally students who cheat write out helpful notes; John decided to record the science formulas on his miniature iPod. The iPod would fit neatly into his shirt pocket, the lead into his ear. He would pretend that he was wearing a hearing aid – and there was no rule against that; he had checked.
Mum's calling you down for breakfast. You can listen to that music later,
said his father, who had entered John's room unexpectedly.
Being almost caught in the act, John quickly put his new iPod back on the music rack beside three other iPods and accompanied his father downstairs to the dining room.
The breakfast consisted of all the foods that John loved to eat, but he hardly touched anything. His mind was occupied with a dozen other things, and he was only half listening to his father's advice on the most common types of questions set by examiners. His mother also was giving him some tips about doing the easy questions first and leaving the difficult ones until the end. John felt like screaming; he could not wait to get out of the house.
All of a sudden, John noticed the time. It was ten minutes to nine. Oh no – look at the time!
Don't worry, son, I'll take you in the car. I don't have any morning meeting today,
said his father.
John was about to leave with his father when he realised he had forgotten his helpful iPod. He quickly dashed upstairs to get it. Then getting into the car, John asked his father to drive as fast as possible to the examination centre.
John Decides to Cheat: Chapter 2
John managed to arrive on time for the examination. Everyone was waiting nervously for the exam to begin.
You may start now,
announced the examiner.
John looked round. It
