About this ebook
Jordin and Pepper lay lazily in a park when the lights go out. All of them. A blackness opens up that fear fills with every nightmare.
"Could be a power outage."
"There's no light for hundreds of miles."
The city tries to stay calm. On every mind, a single question arises. Will the light ever come again? And if it does, what ruin will it reveal?
Rei Rosenquist writes the Broken Circle stories from a dark place, holding a black hope close to a faintly beating heart. These stories bring you a gritty speculative future so hollow it will leave you hunting, squinting, begging for light.
A short story in approximately 4000 words.
Rei Rosenquist
Rei Rosenquist first remembers life as seen out the high window of a hotel balcony. Down below is a courtyard, swarms of brightly dressed tourists, the beach. The memory is nothing but a blue-green washed image. Warmth and sunlight. Here, they are three years old, and this is the beginning of a nomadic story-teller’s life. Over the years, they have traveled to many countries, engaged many peoples, picked up new habits, and learned new languages. But, some things never change. For them, these are stories, food service, and traveling. These three passions have bloomed from hobbies, studies, and jobs into a way of life. These days, Rei can be found in between Tokyo, Kailua, and Bellingham, Washington pouring beautiful latte art, baking off a batch of famous savory scones, and cozying up with a laptop to obsessively write mountains of dark speculative fiction. It was a few minutes past midnight. Hanging from a dirty concrete pole, a fogged up city park streetlight glowed bright as a sun, yellow-orange and perfectly round. Pepper and Jordin lay on the grass, bikes thrown down haphazardly. They’d biked here a few hours ago, but were reluctant to head home. It wasn't a long ride back or anything. Just that the night was so nice and the city lights sparkled so pretty down the slowing hill where they lay sprawled out like two school kids with nothing to do. It was fun to pretend the obligations of adult life weren’t slowly encroaching on them.
And then, boom!
Jordin repeated for the third time.
Pepper had heard this story a hundred times. In it, some secret resistance clan gets away with blowing up a dam in the east river and setting billions of baby fish free. Sounded more exciting than it really was. In reality, the story was a conglomeration of vague facts and fake details. You had to make it up as you went along.
So, then the water rushed out and so did all of seven them,
Jordin elaborated this round.
