    Liam O'Dell, a 15-year-old gay male, joins the Confederate Army in the American Civil War to forget a terrible childhood and prove his manhood. He finds a role model in Jeb Stuart, his commanding officer. Liam is unaware of his own sexual orientation but becoming aware of how he is different from other boys he knows. He is the son of Irish immigrants. His parents are dead and he is living with his uncle and his grandmother. He has a dark secret in his past that haunts his present. He is well-educated, thanks to his grandmother, despite having grown up most of his life on a farm. The family owns no slaves.
