    Jeff Giles grew up in Cohasset, Massachusetts. Most recently, he was the deputy managing editor of Entertainment Weekly, where he oversaw all coverage of movies and books, including the magazine's championing of YA fiction. Jeff has written for Rolling Stone and The New York Times Books Review. He also coauthored The Terrorist's Son, a nonfiction book that won an Alex Award from the American Library Association and has since been translated into more than a dozen languages. While reporting on the Lord of the Rings movies for Newsweek, Jeff was invited to be an extra in The Return of the King. He played a Rohan soldier, and--because he didn't have a beard or mustache--they glued yak hair to his face. Jeff lives with his family in Montana. @MrJeffGiles

      The Edge of Everything by Jeff Giles is yet another book that took me entirely by surprise. I found the idea of bounty hunters for Lowlands rather fascinating. Plus, I fell in love with X and Zoe’s little brother. Actually, I fell in love with all of the characters.The Edge of Everything is not perfect. I am not a fan of the insta-love trope in general, and Mr. Giles did nothing to sell me on the connection between Zoe and X. To make matters worse, the world-building is weak. We end the novel with as many questions about the Lowlands as we started, knowing very little about the power structure or even if the Lowlands is a stand-in for Hell.For all its faults, I still find The Edge of Everything charming. Mr. Giles might struggle with world-building, but he does know how to establish dialogue. Even better, he understands teenagers. At no point in time did I question Zoe’s voice or her interactions with her friends. To me, they sounded like my daughter and her friends.Also, although we understand very little about the Lowlands, I want to know more. Those scenes in the Lowlands are interesting because they offer us a chance to learn more. If I were to read the sequel, it would be because I feel the sequel will show us even more information and answers about the Lowlands.The Edge of Everything may have its issues, but I found them a non-issue. I could even forget the insta-love trope because I enjoyed the rest of their interactions so much. Two weeks after finishing the story, I find myself still thinking about the story and the unanswered questions I have, to the point where that sequel is looking more appealing every day.

      An amazing young adult debut that had me on the edge of my seat! I wanted to read this story because the main character is a bounty hunter from a hell called the lowlands. That alone sounded so intriguing and I was thrilled when I got my hands on this book! From the start, I was into X’s character. He just came on the scene appearing so strong and confident but tortured and I wanted to know more!The scenes in this book were easy to visualize. The development of the lowlands was spectacular. The concept of how souls were taken to the lowlands and that bounty hunters were employed to collect them was fascinating! I enjoyed learning about the hierarchies that exist in the lowlands and how X came to be there. Even better was when the bomb was dropped regarding X’s beginnings. You are teased with the truth it has me begging for more!Zoe’s character is seventeen and quirky but having just lost her father she is also reeling from the loss. She is not anything super special but I think her relationships are what add interest, especially the one between her and her brother Jonah. She is a loving sister but is, at times, so wrapped up in herself that she fails to see that he is struggling. I loved that little guy’s character. The dynamics in this family added real warmth and comedy to this story.There is a bit of romance going on in this story of the insta-variety but it did not feel false to me. X, for whatever his reasons, is instantly taken with Zoe. I wish there had been a bit more build up to his fascination with her. That he had previously seen her and watched her from afar, you know….burned for her. That would have given a background for the love and longing to develop. At the start of the story he did show off a bit for her, when that little revelation came out it just cracked me up! He wanted Zoe to see him, appreciate him, and I felt that given his background that would actually be realistic. This guy had grown up in hell and heck yeah for him if he just wanted someone to see him and want him.For me every character in this story was a winner, even the antagonists. They were fleshed out very well. Their personalities and struggles were apparent and not everything was as it seemed on the surface. As the story progressed the layers to these characters became apparent and it just made for a richer story. X’s pals Ripper and Banger were comical but at the same time haunted and filled with regret. I really connected with the characters in this story.The scenes in this book are memorable, bittersweet and at times a comedic nail biter! There are twists in this story and the one at the end gave me the “Oh, say it isn’t so feeling,” absolute heart-cringer! I did not want to put this book down! It has to be a series because the ending was a cliffhanger and I need to know more!
