This guide book has been written to help the students who have to read the novel To Kill a Mockingbird
at their high school or college in their literature course.
Generally, students read novels and stories as means of entertainment, but the first reading of novels or stories does not enable them to read between the lines that can help them to pursue their literature course.
While reading a novel, you must try to read a little about the background of the author, the background of the particular work that you are going to read, and the response of reviewers and newspapers, or magazines.
Then it is important to explore which genre the novel or story fits in. The next is to know about the time period and the place where the story takes place. Before reading the main or original text it is better to read the summary or gist of the book or story that you are going to read, for it prepares you for what you are going to read.
While going through the original text of a story or novel, pay attention to the new or strange words and note them down in your work book to study later. Write down the references and allusions on one page to study and investigate later.
Certain phrases or lines might be strange to you, but do not worry because you can always study the meanings or definition of such lines or phrases to add to your strength.
Having gone through the story, you should begin your analysis. First of all think about the title of the story, whether it is appropriate, relevant to the story, or whether it is metaphorical. It is possible that you try to find the title in the lines of the original text but you fail. The allegorical titles have their meanings which are to be understood through other sources. The more you research, the better comprehension you have.
Then you concentrate on the genre of the work. Read the comments and reviews on internet from scholars, reviewers, newspapers, and other people and learn what others say about that piece of literature which you are trying to understand and interpret.
Try to establish the subject, themes, and other significant things which strike you in the story. Don’t get discouraged if others say different things about the story you are reading because it is their interpretation. You are free to present your logical interpretation to surprise others.
Find out images, the repeated words or phrases, and symbols and motifs to add to your interpretation of the text.
Eventually, analyze the whole text with the help of the points that we have discussed above. You will surely write a piece that will draw you certain amount of appreciation. The more you read, the better you become at understanding literature.
