    Context

Many readers may be familiar with the case of Adnan Syed and the murder of his ex-girlfriend Hae Min Lee from the groundbreaking investigative podcast Serial, hosted and produced by This American Life producer Sarah Koenig. Listeners became instantly hooked on this Peabody Award–winning podcast, and quickly split into guilty and not guilty camps.

A fascination with true crime, as evidenced by the popularity of Serial and of the documentary series Making a Murderer, combined with the advent of Web sleuthing (citizens undertaking their own investigations online), has overtaken American pop culture in recent years. On websites like Reddit and on personal blogs, members of the public have involved themselves in controversial cases in search of the truth when it seems that law enforcement is not up to the task.

While author Rabia Chaudry is critical of some of Sarah Koenig’s methods of investigation, she is clearly grateful for the spotlight that Koenig shined on Syed’s case, because it raised awareness of the murder and resulted in more helpful amateur sleuths coming on board. Their help was invaluable in uncovering the evidence that convinced a judge to order a new trial for Adnan Syed.

The terror attacks of September 11, 2001, changed many Americans’ attitudes toward followers of Islam. It may be worth noting that they occured while Adnan Syed, a Muslim, was in the midst of a fight to overturn his conviction for murdering his ex-girlfriend in 1999.

At the close of 2016, Adnan Syed awaits a new trial and has asked to be released on bail. Syed’s attorney, Justin Brown, argued that Syed should be freed after 17 years of imprisonment due to an unconstitutional verdict. Meanwhile, prosecutors in Maryland compiled a brief stating that Syed is undeserving of a new trial and that the court was pressured into ordering one by the media attention focused on his case. Syed’s camp stands firm, believing that if prosecutors
