The Comet's Tail
It was the first Sunday Advent. Only the kittens, the shepherds and the three Wise Men knew that the child would be born on the next full moon, and they were impatiently awaiting his arrival. Only they knew that this was the first Sunday Advent.
The shepherds had gathered their flocks and prepared for the trip as soon as they had received the news. The Three Wise Men had also loaded their camels with gold, frankincense and myrrh before setting off for who knows were... in fact, none of them knew exactly where the child would be born. What they did know, however, was that they were to follow the path indicated by a beautiful comet that had appeared in the sky a few days before.
As a matter of fact, the kittens were the only ones to know the secret of Bethlehem. How did they know? Well, it’s difficult to say. Since the beginning of time, kittens have always gathered around in large circles at night – sometimes for just a few minutes, sometimes for hours and hours. They sit, quietly staring up at the sky and purring at the moon, filling the universe with their vibrant energy, which seems to have the power to clear the air and restore order between the earth and the heavens. In those days of Advent, the kittens were content to know that the story of the world was about to change. Several nights after the first Sunday Advent, it was they who first noticed something strange up above. And strange it was... there was nothing unusual in the sky: the comet had vanished! They looked at each other bewildered, and then they raised their heads to look at the sky once more. There was nothing. The sky was as it always had been during a clear night without clouds.
When something unusual happens, the kittens are allowed to break the silence of the circle, and since this seemed to be an emergency, one kitten asked his friends if they ought to check with the other circles; perhaps there would be someone who knew what had happened to the comet. But it was no use; no one had an explanation. Cosimo, the eldest cat of the Primis Circle, the most renowned of all the circles, solemnly cleared his throat and announced, This is bad news! Without the comet, the Wise Men and the shepherds will not arrive in Bethlehem on time. This could ruin the first Christmas holiday. This is truly terrible news!
Then he curled up on a nearby tree trunk to think and reflect in peace. All the other cats stayed quiet so as not to disturb him, then Cosimo began to snore quietly and they left him alone. One should never wake at cat while he dreams. It is during these moments when brilliant ideas arise.
The following night they met again, and Cosimo stood motionless, looking up at the sky for a long time. Without saying anything, he pointed to a large star. At first, it looked no different from the others; it was only after watching it for some time that they noticed a difference.
Do you see that star up there? It is the only one with six rays. That is our comet,
he said.
Wow!
exclaimed in the others in chorus. How did you find it?
It wasn't me,
Cosimo responded. While I was thinking last night, a beautiful little cherub came to visit me and showed me the comet.
Did he tell you what happened to the comet's tail?
asked one of the youngest kittens.
No, not exactly. It's strange, but perhaps the comet got his tail caught up in a cloud while passing through.
How foolish!
exclaimed a kitten, how could one be so careless as to lose one’s tail? Something like that would never happen to me!
You are a cat!
snapped Cosimo, annoyed. The discussion was taking a wrong turn. We are not here to discuss what a cat does and does not do. We need to find a solution for the comet, and we need to do it quickly if we want the Christmas holiday to be a success. Nothing could be worse than if the first Christmas holiday were a disaster!
The kittens immediately stopped talking and began to think very hard. But even though they gave it their all, this problem was simply too difficult to resolve.
In the meantime, the disappearance of the comet was creating turmoil and confusion everywhere. The Wise Men had stopped along the road, confused and disoriented. They had walked for three nights without the comet to guide them, and they had gone in a big circle, ending up exactly where they had started. They didn't know what else to do, and had decided to camp in order to meditate and rest in the hope that a sign from above would help them proceed.
The angel that had told them about the birth of the child had advised them not to ask for help from those passing by, because no one was supposed to know that the child was to be born before it was time. But what else could they do? They looked at each other in silence, dismayed, and without a clue as
