Trusting Your Inner Physician - Dr. Ina Nozek

    INTRODUCTION

WHY NOT YOU? WHY NOT NOW?

It’s staggering to find out how many people are dissatisfied with their lives. Financial stress, problems in marriage, other relationship issues, health challenges, and general lack of fulfillment are unfortunately more common issues for most people than you could ever imagine. Statistically, 72 percent of people polled were dissatisfied with their work and financial situation. According to a recent poll of 3,000 married couples, 6 out of 10 were unhappy in their relationships. Sickness and disease are rampant. Over two-thirds of the American population is overweight. One study done by the Mayo Clinic from 2013 indicates that 70 percent of Americans take prescription drugs, and the second most common prescription is for antidepressants, which obviously suggests that mental health is a huge issue in the U.S.

So what about you? Are you happy in your life? Do you love what you do? Do you feel you are living the life of your dreams? Have you achieved the success you desire? How is your health? CHAPTER 1

    DECIDING YOU’RE WORTH IT

It is in your moments of decision that your destiny is shaped.

    – Tony Robbins

What does it really mean to decide? To make a decision is to draw that line in the sand. When you decide, you’re making a choice. The decision you make is a conclusion or resolution you reach after consideration. What have you been considering? Do you truly want success in your life? Whether it’s success in your relationships, in your business, with your finances, or with your health, decide that you are absolutely worth it! It all starts with a decision.

For me, it took over forty years to draw the final line in the sand about my weight, my body image, and my food addictions. Although I had already conquered my weight issues by then, I still struggled with some binge eating to the point that I would overeat, even though I knew I would feel sick, sluggish, and depressed afterward, and that feeling would take me out of the game of life for at least a day or two, depending on how fast I was able to get myself back on track.

Then one day, I decided I was better than that. I decided I deserved to live in a healthy body and that every single day counted, so to give up a full day or even multiple days, feeling too sick or uncomfortable physically and/or mentally, because of my lack of self-control was doing a great disservice to myself. Since then, I have found balance. Occasionally, I might fall back into my old pattern and overeat at one meal, but it’s not multiple meals. I know I am worth feeling good about myself so I never let myself get out of control anymore. To achieve that difference took a decision–it took me drawing that line in the sand. Please know that if I can do it, you can, too. With anything you want to be successful at, it takes that solid decision.

Another example of someone making a decision to improve his or her life is when Glenn and I finally decided we were both going to quit smoking cigarettes. We had spent years abusing ourselves with the disgusting smoking habit, all the while knowing the risks and potential damage, yet we continued to pollute our bodies. We had tried numerous times to quit on our own. I would often quit on Monday, only to find myself justifying why I needed a smoke by the weekend. I assumed that when I got to chiropractic school, nobody would smoke because they would all be so health-focused. Well, I was wrong! So many of the students smoked cigarettes, along with indulging in other bad habits. However, I knew, and Glenn and I knew together, that not only was it not okay for us to be smoking cigarettes as health professionals to be, but more importantly, we deserved to be healthy, so to do something so blatantly against our health was not acceptable. So on December 31st, 1985, we smoked our last cigarettes and we drew that line in the sand never to smoke again. We decided we were worthy of good health, and smoking cigarettes was absolutely not in alignment with that!

Years ago, I was working at a job I didn’t exactly love. Day after day, week after week, and month after month, I worked at this place. I showed up, did my job the best I could, and went home, but I was miserable. Have you ever had a job that you hated? Maybe you hate your job now. I remember how I felt. I was unhappy, I dreaded going in, and I couldn’t wait for my day off. Imagine how many people struggle with their jobs yet continue at them day after day, week after week, month after month, and–way too often–year after year! How sad. For me, hating my job was draining, yet I stuck it out because I didn’t feel worthy of anything else. It didn’t occur to me that I could decide to find something better. Then one day, I heard some very sad news about a close family member who was ill. I remember thinking how delicate life is and that there’s no reason to waste precious time working at a job that makes me feel so bad. I decided I was worth more than that. I decided that no matter what, I would find another job where I would be happier. So I gave my notice that day. I drew that line in the sand that I would never work at a job or in a career that I wasn’t passionate about. It was a decision and, of course, sometimes it’s easier said than done, depending on our individual situations, but ultimately, it is a matter of deciding that you are worthy of happiness. To spend such a large percentage of your time doing something that doesn’t light you up on some level just isn’t
