    What you need to know

    about Buddhism

    One of the most influential religions today is Buddhism. This religion is considered nontheistic. It encompasses a number of beliefs, traditions and practices based on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, also known as Buddha. Buddha is considered as the awakened one. According to Buddhist belief, he lived in the eastern part of the Indian continent between the 4th and 6th century BC. Also known as the enlightened one, Buddha is also known as the great teacher who shared his thoughts and insights about life. He had helped sentient beings end their pain through the removal of their cravings and ignorance. Through understanding the Four Noble Truths, a person can reach a state of Nirvana.

    Buddhism is one of the largest religions in the world. The estimated range of members is from 350 million to about 1.6 billion, with over 350 to 550 million, and the numbers are rapidly growing. Various Buddhist schools vary according to the exact nature of this religion. Such schools vary on the education of scriptures and teachings. The scripture and doctrine of Ancient Buddhism schools are developed in various closely related languages of ancient India, specifically in Sanskrit and Pali.

    The key concepts of Buddhism

    The foundation of this religion is the Three Jewels: Buddha, Sangha or the community, and Dharma or the teachings. Learning the Three Jewels is like a commitment and a declaration of the Buddhist path. In general, through accepting the Three Jewels, a member can distinguish himself from non-members. Some of the practices that a member will learn include support of monastic community, ethical precepts and the practice of mindfulness meditation. Members are required to learn both discernment and godlike wisdom through the study of scriptures and devotional practices.

    There are two branches of Buddhism recognized today. One is Mahayana, or The Great Vehicle and the other one is Theravada or The School of the Elders. Theravada is practiced mainly in Sri Lanka and in some parts of Southeast Asia. On
