    Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a French pilot and writer, was born in Lyon in 1900 and died off the coast of Corsica in 1944, during a reconnaissance flight for the allied forces. A pioneer of postal aviation and a tireless explorer, he published his first literary works, most of which were autobiographical, between the 1920s and the 1930s (Southern Mail, 1930; Night Flight, 1931).
