Antoine de Saint-Exupéry, a French pilot and writer, was born in Lyon in 1900 and died off the coast of Corsica in 1944, during a reconnaissance flight for the allied forces. A pioneer of postal aviation and a tireless explorer, he published his first literary works, most of which were autobiographical, between the 1920s and the 1930s (Southern Mail, 1930; Night Flight, 1931). The Little Prince (1945) and Wind, Sand and Stars (1939, winner of the Grand Prix du roman de l’Académie française [Grand Prize for Fiction from the French Academy]) remain two of his greatest literary
