takeaways
What’s it about?
You’ve probably heard that Danish people are the happiest people in the world. That’s despite having sky-high taxes and long, dark winters (with often only one hour of daylight a day). There are numerous independent studies highlighting Danish happiness levels, yet their national cheerfulness seems to be at odds with our idea of happiness being linked to sunny weather and around-the-year beach parties. So why are Danes so happy, and what can we learn from them?
The reasons for Danish happiness are various, and include a national commitment to embracing and celebrating everything Danish; a comprehensive welfare state that offers lifelong learning, excellent health care, and a strong social safety net; and a powerful sense of national pride.
Denmark is also highly egalitarian and non-hierarchical, and has a strong commitment to promoting a work-life balance. Much importance is placed on family bonding and quality time spent with loved ones, and leisure time is also valued, with Danes enjoying full, sociable, hobby-filled lives. National trust levels are also very high, making people feel safer.
All these factors add up to a citizenship that feels proud of their country, enjoys having fun
