About this ebook
Berlitz Pocket Guide New Zealand combines informative text with vivid colour photography to uncover a country of spectacular natural beauty. It covers everything you need to know about the country's attractions, from the urban centres of Auckland, Wellington and Queenstown to the glowworm caves at Waitomo, the geothermal area of Rotorua, whale-watching at Kaikoura and glacier-trekking in the Southern Alps. Handy maps on the cover flaps help you navigate, and the book uses colour-coding to differentiate between sections.
To inspire you, the book offers a rundown of the Top 10 Attractions in the country, followed by an itinerary for a Perfect Tour of New Zealand. The What To Do chapter is a snapshot of ways to spend your time, from watching a Maori concert to catching a rugby game, from adrenaline-pumping sky-diving and white-water rafting to the more sedate activities of hiking, kayaking and fishing.
The book provides all the essential background information, including a brief history of New Zealand and an Eating Out chapter covering the varied cuisine and delicious wines. There are carefully chosen listings of the best hotels and restaurants, and an A-Z of all the practical information you'll need.

Day 1 pm
Auckland
Disembark at the waterside cafés of the Viaduct Harbour, then tour Auckland’s historical buildings, wharfs and Ferry Building, finishing up at the Sky Tower. Dine on scrumptious lamb racks at the Tower’s revolving Orbit 360˚ Restaurant while watching the sunset.
Day 2
South to Rotorua
Hire a car and drive south to Rotorua. Take a lake cruise past Mokoia Island, then walk through Government Gardens to Rotorua Museum. Visit Te Puia Maori Arts & Crafts Institute, and Whakarewarewa to see boiling mud pools and geysers.

Rotorua
Tour the trout pools of Rainbow Springs, have a blissful soak at the Polynesian Pools’ Lake Spa, then catch the Skyline Gondola up Mt Ngongotaha for awe-inspiring views. Ride the luge down, catch a cultural show and dine on hangi for lunch or dinner. When dark, return to Rainbow Springs (using your same day ticket) for an encounter with nocturnal kiwi birds.
Days 4-5
Capital Wellington
Fly south to Wellington to explore its wealth of historical buildings. Tour parliament, then ride the cable car to Wellington Botanic Gardens for outstanding views, before lunching at a Kelburn street café. Peruse the exhibits of Te Papa Tongarewa Museum, then stroll along the waterfront through Frank Kitts Park and on to Queens Wharf to Shed 5, (for more information, click here) a seafood restaurant inside an 1880s wool shed.
Day 6
Picton Port
Catch the Inter-islander ferry across the Cook Strait, cruising through the Tory Channel and Queen Charlotte Sound to Picton. Join a wine tour through nearby Marlborough vineyards, or head to Motuara Island (a wildlife sanctuary) where Cook claimed New Zealand for the Crown.
Day 7
The East Coast
Hire a car and drive south along the coast to Kaikoura to join a whale-watching cruise, before continuing south to Christchurch. Stay on the city outskirts and visit the International Antarctic Centre and Orana Wildlife Park.

Disembark, join a farm tour or horse ride, or simply revel in the silence. When ready, return to Queenstown.
