Notable works:

The Pigeon (1987), novel
Patrick Süskind was born in Ambach, Bavaria, in 1949 and is the son of a journalist. He began writing after studying history in Munich and Aix-en-Provence, but only began publishing his work later in life. His play The Double Bass, which was first performed in 1981, takes the form of a monologue by a musician whose life revolves solely around his instrument. This was followed by the publication of his novel Perfume: The Story of a Murderer (1985), which was enormously successful, and The Pigeon (1987), which tells the story of a security guard who keeps his life meticulously organised in order to avoid the unexpected. Süskind has also worked as a screenwriter for television, and his writing stands out for its masterful portrayals of isolated individuals and their obsessions. He is a very private individual, and generally shuns the media spotlight.
