My friends are like my family period. I would not trade them for anything in this world! When you don't have the best family environment at home, you seek out those who are like-minded and have the ability to support you in those ways that family can lack. It means the world to me to be able to pick up my phone and vent to the same people I could 20 years ago, know they want nothing from me other than to know I'm good. We can cry, laugh and fight; but through it all, they love me and will always tell me the truth.
Anyone who knows me knows I am very private. My inner circle is no different. Out of necessity, I have to keep the things I value very near and dear to my heart because telling the wrong person can result in waking up tomorrow to the whole world knowing my business. In the past, I have not always been the best judge of character and have allowed some people into my circle who did not mean me any good. I have paid the price for that dearly.
It's funny how fake and crazy the entertainment industry can be; but in it I have found some of the most genuine, loyal, and supportive women who I am able to learn from and be motivated by every day. Some of them are icons and real bosses, so when they tell me they're proud of the moves I make, I know I'm really doing something. Hearing encouragement like that makes me want to go that much harder.
Everything in my life is not roses. In fact, these last few years have been crazy as hell; but those who have never wavered, they are my real sisters.
I really feel like friendship is an important thing in life. It's always good to have good friends around. I have met quite a few people in my life. I truly believe people come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. I truly value the people in my life who are lifetime people.
A few years ago, I really didn't know what true friendship was all about. I thought when I was younger, Okay, this is my best friend because she's around me, we dress alike, we are together all the time. I really didn't fully understand the true definition of a real friend because I'd never really had one.
I have a few friends who I can honestly say I call them sister-friends; we are close as friends, but we have a relationship like sisters. We're close and we are there for each other, through the ups and the downs, no matter what. There are only a handful of people who I can say that about. I can honestly say God has blessed me and put some amazing people in my life.
I'm the type of person who always has a guard up when it comes to meeting new people. I don't see anything wrong with meeting people and getting to know them, but you have to know that everybody is not a friend. Some people are associates, while others have ulterior motives.
My friends Danielle, Lidia, and Shay are like the true definition of real friends. I have quite a few friends. My industry friends; Tiny, Kandi, Rasheeda, Monica, Monyetta and Lena who I consider my sister-friends as well, are friends who I met a couple years ago. They have proven themselves to be loyal, great people. We have a good time together, we have a lot in common, and we also are very supportive of one another.
I also have those who were my friends before anybody knew me. The ones who have been there for me throughout it all. Before the lights, camera, action, they were around and they're still around. Real friends are there when things are both good and bad. My friends have shown me that they are there for me through it all. When I'm sad, I can call them. When I'm happy, I can call them. I can cry with them and we all know that it's okay to disagree with each other.
We accept the fact that we all are different and come from all different walks of life. We have things that we dislike about each other, but we all are aware of what those things are. Yeah we talk about each other to each other just like every other group of friends. When we all get together, please believe it's gonna come back up so we can discuss it. I would be lying to you if I told you that we never get into arguments or get mad at one another. We do all the time. The difference is we are mature enough to disagree, talk about it and keep it pushing.
My girls are the definition of real friends. When I hurt, they hurt. When they hurt, I hurt. You can't put the friendship title on everybody because everybody is not deserving of it.
I'm a very sweet and friendly person. I'm not a bitch at all. Now, don't get me wrong, I can be a bitch if you bring that out of me. I try not to surround myself with people who bring that side out of me. If I meet someone, I'm going to be me, and people like that.
Don't get me wrong, I’m human I have good days and bad days. Sometimes, I just don't feel like being bothered. Being fake is not really my thing. For the most part, if I mess with you, I mess you. If I don't, I won't pretend. When you meet me, you either love me or hate me. I hardly ever come across people who can say they dislike me. They will usually say something like, She's real and humble,
although I might even get a little crazy. LOL! It depends on where and how we meet.
I'm not on that fake Hollywood shit. In this industry, I run across a lot of super Hollywood people. I don't vibe with them. I'll speak and keep it pushing. I also run across a lot of the fake people who are Hollywood in public and Hollywood in real life, if you get what I'm saying. I love meeting people who are like me; who enjoy having fun, who are not super phony and who are not afraid to be themselves.
Sometimes it is super hard trying to separate the real from the fake. People these days do a good job at pretending in the beginning, just to get in your circle to get the tea. I realized that you can't share your business with everybody. You have the friends who you can share everything with and you have the friends who you can’t tell anything to.
You just have to know who you are around and know who is in your circle. Understand that when people show you who they are, believe them. The ladies that I have been blessed with, have never switched up on me. They know my deepest secrets and I have never heard about them repeating anything outside of our circle.
I love supporting my friends and my friends love supporting me. We don't compete with each other. I want to see all my girls win because that's what real friends do. We are not a bunch of bitter, jealous girls and I thank God for that. It doesn't matter what person has more or which person has less, we still look at each other and treat each other with the same respect. I don't think I’m better than my girls and they don't think they better than me. We not on that shit at all!
My circle is the true meaning of girl power. There have never been any moments or jealousy or anything like that. I love my friends to death, and I want what’s best for them. I want my girls to be happy all around the board.
I want them to be successful. And I know they want the same thing for me. If you have a friend who always wants to compete with you, that's not your friend. I once had that type of friend in my circle and had to get rid of her quick. Real friends don't compete. Real friends want the whole squad to win; that's the definition of real squad goals. Just know your friends and know who you're allowing in your circle because everybody is not worthy of your time or energy.
You have to be careful who you have around you. When my brothers died all of my friends came together and planned a surprise party for me at my house. I was real down and didn't want to be around people so they all came over and gave me a party called the Love on Toya Party
. I thought it was the sweetest thing ever! All of the ladies are extremely busy and they all are married or in long term relationships. The fact that they put time to the side to be there for me meant a lot.
They all even volunteered to help pay for the service. I will never ask anyone to do anything for me, but the fact that none of them would let up proved just how much they wanted to genuinely help. They didn't care how many times I said I was good, they were like, We are doing this because we want to.
All of them showed up to be there for me and my family and it really meant a lot to me to have their support.
They were very supportive, checking on me every day bringing me food. Whatever I needed, they were there. This situation showed me that my girls are not just around to party with me when everything is all good. But when I'm in a dark place and sad, they were there also cheering me up, holding my hand, and helping me get through the storm. They were helping me get strong again. I will never forget this.
I value our friendship, and I would do the same for them. I just wanted to take a moment to just shout out real friends because real friends are truly hard to find. If you have a real friend, value your friendship.
My best friend, Lidia, never left my side. For two weeks straight she stayed with me! I don't usually handle death well. When someone close to me passes away, I'm always afraid to
