    Chapter 1:

    A Confederacy of Douches

    The existence of Falconhead is strictly disavowed, and its location is beyond top secret. From the outside it resembles so many of the clapboard houses that line the coast of Martha’s Vineyard and Cape Cod. However, the WASP-y façade conceals a vast subterranean network of meeting rooms, offices, and connecting passages. Making his way down one of these passages is Jeb Bush. Head bowed and Stetson in hand, Jeb looks very much like the truant schoolboy on his way to the headmaster’s office. Indeed, he is bound for the large central chamber, the War Room, where the politics of the Western World have been steered and influenced for decades. Jeb pauses on the threshold, takes a deep breath, and reaches for the door handle.

    The War Room is not what you might expect; it is more Downton Abbey than Dr. Strangelove. A large mahogany desk dominates the room; behind it, nestled in a wingback chair, sits Barbara Bush. One thin, speckled hand clutches an ornate telephone while her index finger curls around the cord. Her thin lips are the color of dried blood.
