Carnival Cruz (The Bad Man Trilogy Book 2) - K.P. Taylor

This story is a work of fiction and utterly ridiculous. The characters and events herein should not be considered accurate portrayals and are largely the product of the author’s imagination.

    CARNIVAL CRUZ

    By K.P. Taylor

As I drifted along with my bodiless invisibility, I felt myself more and more becoming an empty, floating shape, seeing without being seen and walking without the interference of those grosser creatures who shared my world.

-Thomas Ligotti, The Last Feast of Harlequin

    Chapter 1:

    The Fugitive

Fall 2017. A thick mist blankets the town of Chippewa Falls, some seventy miles east of the Minnesota Border. Founded by hardscrabble folk who built breweries, churches, and schools (usually in that order), this sleepy hamlet is thrust upon the world’s stage by a strange confluence of events. A press conference hastily convened at the most official looking building, the old Jacob Leinenkugel Brewery, is where we turn our attention and begin this strange, sad tale of woe.

I thank you, ladies and gentlemen of the press, for your patience. I’m Deputy Sheriff Sloan. At approximately 20 hundred hours, a prison bus en route to Chippewa Valley Correctional Treatment Facility was involved in a collision. We initially believed that all on board had perished, but now we suspect that Prisoner 4855, Ted Cruz, made it out of there alive.

    What makes you so sure?

An individual matching his description was caught on CCTV stealing a hoagie from a truck stop about 20 minutes later.
