About this ebook

WARNING This story involves ECT, a subject matter that might upset, or annoy some people, just to mention it here.

Susan is a firm believer in method acting. So when she gets offered a role that will involve her staying in a psychiatric ward, she wants to have a short stay, and find out what its like. However, she is less keen on the idea of receiving the sort of treatments her character will be getting while staying there, primarily ECT. But at the same time, she'd love to know how to act out receiving said treatment, so something gets mentioned on her (fake) forms, and doctors put two, and two together, and make five!
But when she gets offered a treatment, without the actual zap of electricity, she decides to accept. What she doesnt know, the doctors may have other plans in mind! All in all, surprises are in store for both Susan, and the doctors, as a result.

I should have been born on a Kansas plain, instead  of which, I was born in the hills of Yorkshire many years ago. I am of Irish ancestry, and though my family emigrated in the early 20th century, I'm still proud of it, even if its pretty diluted by now. I have a big fascination with history, which probably explains the time travel stories that I write. Being a flapper in the 20's would appeal to me no end, though I would miss the internet.

    About the Author

I know I mentioned it in the synopsis, but just to repeat again, this story does depict ECT treatments, and to say this is a subject that people either love or hate would be putting it mildly. None of it is that graphic in this story, to be fair, but I think fair warning is best. For those who might be concerned, no, I haven't been in an ECT suite, in any position, to do any research for this. I would have loved to be able to do so, but practicality didn't permit this, much though I would have loved for it to happen. So, if there are any inaccuracies in the treatment (for any readers who know the details), I apologize in advance.

My thanks as always to James, for his editing work, and to Kris, for producing the cover for me.

My cell phone rang, I pulled it from my bag and checked who it was before answering it. To my surprise, it was my agent. Let’s just say that parts, of any kind, for fifty-somethings aren't quite as prolific as for younger actresses! Anyway, let’s hope he's not just checking on me, to see I'm still alive and kicking, but has something decent to offer me. Realistically, I know, probably not, but no harm in hoping.

Doug, lovely to hear from you. I replied, then added, wittily, Is this just a check-in call, or something more?

I heard him laugh, For once, Susan, it's definitely something more; quite a major role, in fact.

    Seriously? I asked.

"Yes, seriously. Seems to be at least one movie studio that hasn't forgotten about your talents,  he replied jokingly—at least I hope it was jokingly!

So fine, tell me more, I said, now trying to sound quite eager.

Gritty thriller. You'll be playing a wealthy, middle-aged mother, with a couple of children eager to lay their hands on your money, by whatever means possible. Given that you've had a tendency to live life slightly differently to most, they decide to try to get you committed to a psychiatric unit, become trustees of your accounts, and take all your money that way.

Nice kids! I say, laughing back.

Yes, exactly. Even more so when, to avoid you discovering the missing funds, they conspire with the doctors to make your stay last longer than you planned.

    As in? I asked.

"Well, if they can arrange some 'special treatments' for you, that actually make you seem
