    FRONT ROW FORWARDS

THE front row of the scrum has a very important part to play in the game of rugger, and it must be realised that the hooker and his two front-row men are of great importance to the side.

However a game is played the movement usually starts with a scrum and when the movement breaks down, again a scrum usually follows. The number of scrums during a match must of course vary with the standard of play and the weather conditions. A game played in bad weather when conditions for handling the ball are bad will produce a sequence of scrums. Taking into consideration these facts, it can be appreciated what a front-row forward has to put up with. He has to withstand the initial weight of both packs and later the concentrated effort of both packs pushing for the ball.

His work is not complete when the ball has been heeled. He must then break up from the scrum and follow the play as quickly as possible. If a passing movement has broken down he must be on the spot to take part in the loose maul or a forward rush depending on the circumstances. If the ball is kicked into touch he must be one of the first in the line-out, if not the opposition might take advantage of his slowness and throw a quick line-out to an unmarked player.

In the past a front-row forward was not recognised as such and the first forward up to the position of the scrum had to get down in the front row.

There was no recognised hooker and the policy was first up first down. The present day of specialisation might be due to the complexity of the rules. This can best be judged by studying the rules that apply directly to the front
