Foreword
by Michael Rivers
Fitness coach and creator of Cyprus Ultra Marathon.
It all started at the age of 39, after many years of excessive drinking, smoking and generally not looking after myself. I was overweight and my health was starting to suffer. I seemed to be ill with colds more than anyone I knew, always tired and lacking any real energy. I decided to make a change for my health by taking up running. I thought if could do this a few times per week it would help get me back to health and a healthier lifestyle.
I set out with a goal to run 5 km without stopping. The first time I tried to run, I got about 1 km from my apartment exhausted and wanting to vomit. I had the most horrific pain in my lower back from muscles that hadn’t been used in such a way in a very long time. Not one for giving up, repeating this whole miserable experience every week for about 3 months, I was finally able to run 5 km without stopping. Hurray! And as any runner knows this is how it starts, 5 km...10 km...21 km then an all out obsession to run that first marathon. It took me over a year to finally finish a 10 km race without stopping, then came a series of half marathons and then about two years later my first marathon which I achieved in a time of 4:09.
The most surprising part of getting into running was just how much I started to learn about nutrition. It soon became pretty clear that what I ate and drank had an effect on my next training run and race. I first cut out meat from my diet and I started to feel better, then I stopped all dairy and felt amazing, then I became 100% vegan and felt unstoppable! I had by now lost over 12 kg of body fat and never felt fitter or healthier.
I have since run 10 full marathons, countless half marathons and 10k's. And in pursuit of testing my vegan diet, I took off one morning in the Cyprus heat of 34C, ran to Larnaca airport 50 km away, turned around and ran back to my home in Limassol, a total of 100 km in 15 hours. A month later, I ran a full official marathon each Sunday for 3 weeks. Paphos Marathon, Rome Marathon and Limassol Marathon. All completed 100% injury free.
From that first 5 km goal to 100 km, my life has changed completely because of running. I’m now a vegan sports and fitness coach and the creator of one of the world’s most challenging ultra marathons - The Cyprus Ultra Marathon.

About the Authrs
Ellen Crombie
Ellen Crombie as you can guess is quite into running. She is been blogging since the age of 14 about everything running related- and she is hoping to continue her blog as she pursues and (at one point) achieves her Olympic dream. However there’s one problem… it’s unlikely that she will make the Great Britain’s team whilst she is a teenager. ‘TeenRunner’ may need a name change
