    Delaplaine lives on South Beach, Miami’s Billion Dollar Sandbar. He writes in widely varied fields: screenplays, novels (adult and juvenile) and journalism. He also has a series of Long Weekend Guides covering some 50 cities around the world. Email: andrewdelaplaine@mac.com He writes several series: The “JACK HOUSTON ST. CLAIR” political thriller novels. “THE ADVENTURES OF SHERLOCK HOLMES IV,” a series of novels starring the great-great-grandson of the famous consulting detective. “THE ANNALS OF SANTOPIA” series, an epic that follows a Santa born in 1900 through to his death 82 years later. The AMOS FREEMAN police thrillers. Other novels: “The Trap Door” follows a boy who is taken back in time to 1594 and Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre. “The Meter Maid Murders,” a comic look at a detective trying to nab a serial killer on South Beach who only murders meter maids.       While Downtown has the hottest, trendiest eateries in Manhattan, Midtown doesn’t simply cater to out-of-town businessmen and local moguls tearing through their expense account dinners or bastions of stuffy places fawning over wealthy ladies who lunch, though of course there are dozens of places that exist precisely for those two crowds.

      Since so much business is done in Midtown, however, lunch is every bit as an event as dinner is Downtown. While most places Downtown are more fun at night, lunch is more fun in Midtown.

      Unless, of course, you slide into Joe Allen’s on West 46th Street after a play and you run into the cast celebrating a good review, which just goes to show you that for every rule there is in New York (or in Life), there’s an equally strong exception to it.
