Christian Rudder starts this first chapter by noting how people notice the passage of time. He notes that there are thousands of different cures for aging because since the beginning of time people have been obsessed with aging. He recalls what his own childhood bedroom was like and relates the walls of that bedroom to social media sites such as Facebook and Myspace. Almost everyone has their own page for their thoughts and actions to be broadcast to the rest of the world and they will be there for at least the foreseeable future. Each person will be able to look back at the digital walls of their childhood and be able to show them to their own children.
He states that this type of data is what scientists call longitudinal data from following the same people over a generous stretch of time. Even though this data is not complete and in fact it is only 6-years-old. This data will enable scientists to reach all kinds of conclusions about modern human life, although not everything can be calculated this way, there are certain things that are constant including age, sex and beauty.
