PREFACE
THE writer of this first edition of A Guide to Sexing Chicks was a member of the faculty of the College of Agriculture and Forestry, University of Nanking, Nanking, China, during the period that Dr. Kiyoski Masui and Dr. Juro Hashimoto discovered and gave to the world the art of sexing chicks. Also he made two visits to Japan and had the good fortune of sitting at the feet of Dr. Masui during a series of lectures and seeing Kojima at work among a group of Japanese student-farmers.
Later he found Chinese farmers practising the art in the large poultry raising districts of Shantung. It seems that the art of sexing chicks has been known in the Orient for a long time, but credit should be extended to Dr. Masui, Dr. Hashimoto, Mr. Kojima and Mr. Sakyiyama for raising the art out of mediocrity and placing it on a scientific foundation for the benefit of the poultry industry the world over.
Since returning from the Orient it has been a pleasure for the past five years to make the art of sexing chicks available to the poultrymen of the United States and Canada. With this end in view the writer has given unsparingly of his experience, time and energy to the preparation of this guide, and it is hoped that it will reach a larger group of poultrymen than is physically possible in lectures and demonstrations.
Finally, it must be admitted that this guide is addressed primarily to poultrymen who are unable to obtain expert assistance in sexing chicks, and if it will make up for the lack of properly trained teachers for the time being it will have served its purpose well.
