PREFACE
IT is hoped that this book will explain itself. It is written in response to a demand for something simple, something that does not require a knowledge of botany, or indeed, an extensive knowledge of anything.
It is written by the Author of The Study of Cacti
in collaboration with one who is little more than a beginner, and who has made every mistake a beginner could make, and who should therefore be in a position to appreciate just how much and how little a beginner knows.
The expert is apt to credit people with more knowledge than they really possess, and that is just where the other fellow comes in as far as this book is concerned. For the other fellow will see to it that nothing is written that he does not understand, and if he can understand it, well, the reader should be able to.
The cultivation of Cacti and other succulents is spreading rapidly. A society has been formed and is increasing in numbers and enthusiasm. Both on the Continent and in America Cacti are grown extensively. Here in England with the exception of favoured spots on the South Coast, the difficulties are greater, but for that very reason the pleasure in producing a healthy collection of plants is greater than can ever be experienced in sun-drenched countries. And it can be done.
A small but valuable collection of rare Cacti and Euphorbias is growing and flourishing at this present time on a flat roof in London, housed in two glass cases, heated by electricity. Four hours a day is the maximum sunlight it ever gets in the summer. Surrounding houses a storey higher shut out light and aid. A worse situation could hardly be imagined, yet somehow or other the owner has managed to make the plants happy. (See Frontispiece.)
Many people give up collecting because their plants do not thrive. No wonder, for there is nothing more depressing or uglier than a lot of sick cacti.
The majority of the members of the Cactus and Succulent Society live some distance from London, and are consequently unable to attend its meetings. We hope that this book will help them.
PREFACE TO THE SECOND EDITION
THE authors of this little book are glad to think that it is proving useful enough to demand a second reprinting, this time under the difficult conditions of war. The desirability of an interest apart from one’s work is now well realised, but leisure hours are limited and uncertain, so that the cultivation of such plants as succulents, which do not need constant daily attention, is commending itself to many people who are taking up this hobby for the first time. As with other things, it is not the best moment to begin, for specialised growers are now almost entirely occupied with other things so that plants are not so easy to acquire; also the Cactus and Succulent Society of Great Britain, which formerly helped to unite cactus lovers, is suspended for the time being and the novice must perforce depend on the written word for guidance. The authors hope that the simple instructions given here will direct the newcomer into sound methods of cultivation of such plants as he can now obtain, so that he may be ready to share the larger joys of building up a good collection when opportunity comes again.
