    Chapter One: Introduction

    Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro was first published in 2005. It is a dystopian science fiction novel.

    The novel was nominated for the Booker Prize in the same year of its publication, although the author had already received that award for his book The Remains of the Day in 1989.

    The novel has received several other literary awards. It has been highly acclaimed by critics and reviewers. Time Magazine included Never Let Me Go to its TIME 100 Best English Language Novels from 1923 to 2005.

    The novel was also the winner of the ALA Alex Award in 2006. It was adapted into a movie in 2010. It was also made into a Japanese television drama which was aired in 2016.

    The title of the novel has been taken from a song from an album called Songs After Dark by a fictional singer Judy Bridgewater.

    The story is set in a dystopian world where human clones are created. Their organs are going to be donated when they become young adults.

    The story follows Kathy. She is also a clone. She happens to have been raised at a boarding school set up for future ‘donors.’

    The story of the novel is related in flashback. As the novel opens, Kathy happens to be thirty one and she is ready to donate her first organ.

    She happens to have worked as a ‘carer’ for the past eleven years. She has worked as a nurse and companion to clones that are in the process of donating their organs.

    Chapter Two: Plot Overview

    Kathy is the protagonist of the novel. As the novel opens, she is thirty one years old, a carer. She is a nurse who takes care of the donors. At the beginning of the novel, she begins to talk about looking after donors.

    She has spent more than eleven years as a ‘carer.’ She often remembers the time she happens to have spent at Hailsham, a fictional boarding school in England. The teachers were their guardians at that school.

    The teachers used to teach regular classes, but at the same time, they emphasized on the importance of keeping healthy. They did not allow students to smoke. It was like a crime
