Prologue
Great Briton, 1789.
Master Burke, hide! Come quick, under the bed and remain quiet.
He had just reached the age of ten, but he knew something terrible was about to happen when his Nanny Desirae ordered him to hide. He huddled in the dark corner hearing screaming and shouting from below. He tightly hugged the wooden sword his father had carved for him just before his mother died. Burke trembled and squeezed his eyes tight trying to remember her face. He had been only four when she was thrown from her mare breaking her neck and her features had faded from his memory as the years passed. But, he could still recall how he felt in her warm embrace. Oh, how he wished she could be holding him now.
It seemed as if had been under the bed for hours when he heard clashing of swords outside his door. Then he heard the clanking of boots on the wooden floor and Nanny Desirae screamed. A deep voice demanded, Where’s the duke’s whelp, the little bastard?
He, he ran a-away,
his nanny sputtered.
The man growled and she screamed again, and then it went deadly quiet. He opened his eyes to see his nanny lying on the floor in a pool of blood that was flowing from her neck. Her eyes were open, and seeing the horror in them, he shoved his tiny fist into his mouth to keep from making a choking sound.
The boots walked out but he remained there until another pair of boots walked into the room. His heart was thumping so loud he thought for sure the person would hear it. Was it the same man? He feared to breathe and he was trembling so that his teeth were clashing and he bit his tongue. Then his worse fear came true and a large hand reached in and yanked him out from under the bed. Before he had a chance to scream, the sweaty hand covered his mouth.
Shhh!
the man warned. I will not hurt you Burke Van Horn. Stay hidden until m’lord, is convinced that you are not here.
Burke’s back was against the man’s muscular chest and he was confined in his big burly arms. Do you understand and if I remove me hand, will you be quiet?
he asked.
He nodded and was released. He turned and looked into the bluest eyes he had ever seen. The soldier was handsome and young, but had a scar from his temple to his cheek. Although the man was a tall, Burk waved his wooden sword at him, sticking it into his stomach. The only reaction he got was laughter. You got guts, whelp, I give you that!
Armus!
someone shouted. Did you find the little bastard?
Nay, m’lord,
he shouted back. The room is empty except for a dead servant.
Hide,
he shoved Burke and he dove back under the bed in time to see another set of boots come back in; he recognized them as the same ones that had been here before.
Come, I have slain the little bastard’s sire, his land is now mine in payment for the debt he owed me. No one cheats me. I am Lord Jaffe Thornton!
Aye, m’lord,
answered the man with the scar.
Burke did not know how long he remained there trembling but the next thing he knew, he smelled something burning. He was so frightened that he lay there frozen until the room filled with suffocating smoke and he began to choke. Soon his eyes were tearing and his lungs were stinging something awful. A little voice in his head told him to run, get out. Finding some courage, he listened and rolled out from under the bed but the room was engulfed with flames. The only way out was the window and he crawled, coughing and wheezing trying to breathe. It seemed as if the window was miles away and he’d never reach it, but he prevailed.
He couldn’t open it and he spat out a few words his father had punished him for saying once, it helped his anger for the moment. Eyes tearing and lungs burning, he took his sword and hit the glass hard a few times before shattering it. But, before he could climb out, a piece of burning wood fell onto his left arm burning
