    Chapter One

Stella stretched her arms out wide and smiled. She could see the sun peeking through the window and knew today would be a good day. She stretched out again with a large yawn and reached beside her. When her hand came up empty she looked beside her. There was no one there. There was no lingering smell or indent in the pillow either which said nobody slept in that spot last night. She sighed again thinking of the date. Joseph would be home tomorrow. She didn’t know how she felt anymore.

Joseph was her husband of the last five years. They had a great marriage in the beginning and the sex was off the hook. Now it seemed that things had changed drastically and it wasn’t for the better. She sat up in the bed and looked around. You would think she was a single woman if you didn’t see the wedding picture in the living room and his clothes hanging in the closet.

Joseph was a co-pilot when they married. Now that he had been moved up to pilot at the airlines, he was gone more frequent. At first she didn’t mind but as the days slowly ticked by she began to realize that maybe they weren’t as married as she had wanted them to be. She missed him and found that although her days were filled with work, the nights killed her. Not just the sex but having someone there to comfort her and hold her through the night. She was very proud of him for the promotion but sometimes she wished that he had never received it. She tried not to think like that though knowing it was selfish. Sighing again she slowly sat up and swung her legs around on the bed. Getting to her feet she stretched once again like a cat waking from a long nap.

Her feet padded quietly against the hardwood floors as she walked to the bathroom and flipped on the switch. A shower was just what she needed. It would help to wake her up. She stepped into the shower and sighed with pleasure as the warm water beat down her back. It felt great and did the job in waking her up. Stepping from the shower a little while later she slipped into her scrubs and went to the kitchen.

The mornings were some of the times that she missed Joseph the most. He was always up and ready before her and had a cup of coffee waiting. She flipped on the coffeemaker and turned to grab a granola bar. She missed his breakfasts too. One more day. She smiled as she thought of her husband. They had met on the airline where he had been working. She had been terrified of flying back then and he had overheard her talking to the flight attendant before she went through the tunnel to board the plane. He had come over and talked to her and after a few minutes had her laughing so hard that the plane was forgotten completely.

When they had landed in Los Angeles he had asked her to dinner and they ate at the restaurant in the airport. She wouldn’t say that it would have been her first pick, but it ended up being one of the best dates she had ever been on. He started to see her then, visiting her hometown as much as he could. Six months later he was a permanent resident. They had become inseparable then and he had cut his number of flights down as they began to date. She had finally finished college and was excited to get a job at Harbor Institute.

Stella was a physical therapist, assistant. She had thought about going back to school to get her bachelor's but had decided she would rather just be the assistant. She didn’t want the pressure and responsibility of being a full out therapist. She liked to work with the patients but she was always under surveillance. Not someone standing over her shoulder but there was always a therapist in the building when she worked with a patient.

She slowly sipped her coffee and then poured the rest in the travel mug on the counter. If she didn’t hurry she would be late. Picking the cup up, she gathered her gym bag and purse, and made her way to the door. There on the hook where they always were hung her keys by the door. She had laughed when Joseph brought the long piece of wood with hooks home. The first few years they were married she was always losing her keys. She had spare keys to everything then. She remembered the weird places she would find them like the laundry room or in the refrigerator. She shook her head in remembrance. It was just something else to talk about.

    Chapter Two

Stella smiled out the window and waved to Tracey next door. Like her, Tracey was always alone but it was for a different reason. She was recently divorced. She had sat with Tracey as she cleaned her husband’s belongings from the house. She knew how hard it must be for her.

Fifteen minutes later she pulled into the parking lot of the Harbor Institute and her smile turned to a frown when she noticed the amount of people outside. There was a ton of people holding signs and there were even cops. She quickly slid from her car and made her way to the side door.

Hey, someone's going in. Let’s see if we can go too.

She turned wide eyes to the man who said it. He had to be in his late 30’s with dark curly hair. He had a white button down shirt and dark blue dress pants on. She knew instantly that something was going on when she saw what he held. It was a microphone with a man holding a huge camera behind him following. She shook her head in irritation when she realized that the reporter was apparently talking about her. She pulled the door shut quickly behind her just as the man reached the end of the building where she was. Thankfully he wasn’t able to get in and neither was anyone else.

I see you got to see our visitors uh?

She turned around at the voice. Oh my, goodness Beth what is going on?

Beth shrugged her shoulders causing her dark bob to bounce as she spoke. Guess it’s the big time athlete we got here with an injury. You know the type. Cocky and sure of themselves. Too much ego and not enough talent. Stella knew that athletes were a sore spot with Beth. She had been engaged to one until he left her for another woman. Stella just didn’t understand why she continued to do what she did. Beth had told her once that she would rather work with the angry elderly patients than the pompous athletes.

    Who is it this time?

"Some baseball star. Seems he slid into second base and the idiot messed up his knee. Needs physical therapy to help strengthen the muscle after surgery. Two pins in his ankle where it was broken in three places. And I’m not talking no hairline fracture. I mean a clean break all the way
