PREFACE
Silence, Simplicity & Solitude: A Complete Guide to Spiritual Retreat and A Heart of Stillness: A Complete Guide to Learning the Art of Meditation were originally published in 1992. They were intended to be self-help guides for people who wanted to learn about and practice meditation in the comfort of their own homes without instructions from a particular teacher. It is true that teachers are important resources for one’s spiritual path. The guidance and care offered by a good teacher is invaluable. Yet it is also true that we can quickly acquire on our own, with minimal guidance, the skills of various styles of meditation, and in addition we can design a self-guided spiritual retreat to explore what mystics have experienced for thousands of years. Thus, people interested in meditation and retreat are often advised to keep on the lookout for a compatible spiritual friend, guide, or teacher, but not to delay the process of learning on their own.
The purpose of these books is to go beyond communicating the potential of the meditative experience, but also to encourage readers to delve into the depths of their souls, to explore the boundaries of their hearts, and to discover the nature of their minds. For thousands of readers who are familiar with Silence, Simplicity & Solitude and A Heart of Stillness, the approach of emphasizing personal experience has been powerful. Many people have written heartfelt letters describing how their lives were changed by the meditative and retreat experiences outlined in these books.
Human inquiry into the nature of the mind has been a consistent theme since the beginning of history. From the moment of the first Aha!
—when someone realized there was some kind of thinker behind a personal thought—we have probed and scrutinized our internal process in an effort to understand how it works. The basis of this search, I believe, is our intuition that a momentous secret of creation will be revealed when we finally comprehend the origin of thought.
Although science has significantly multiplied our base of knowledge during the twentieth century, little has been added to the wisdom of thousands of years regarding the function of the mind and the inception of thought. Clearly, science has opened new avenues of inquiry; it has developed tools of measurement and methods of evaluation. Yet, the central effort of self-inquiry is always personal, and is better accomplished by individuals working in silence and solitude than in laboratory or academic situations.
A great deal of today’s scientific and philosophical knowledge is difficult to acquire. We must engage many years in specific fields of inquiry to gain a working framework, and even then our endeavor may be limited to a single limb on a tree of knowledge that includes hundreds of other branches of study. Thus, most human intellectual achievement is inaccessible to the average person except on the most cursory level.
The opposite is true of self-inquiry. Each of us has the potential to dwell in realms of understanding of the highest order; each of us may achieve the qualities of personal development that were realized by the greatest masters known to humankind. This does not necessitate learning great volumes of information, nor does it require special intellectual aptitude. Admission to the school of self-inquiry is dependent rather on our motivation, willingness, and effort to explore the inner dimensions of our being.
In the last ten years, meditation and retreats have become far more popular in various parts of the nation and around the world. Yet, for many people, the practice of meditation remains mysterious and somewhat unapproachable. Too often, one who is exploring the possibility of learning meditation encounters claims that particular ideologies, dogmas, or spiritual personalities are the only true path to enlightenment. This can be discouraging to the beginner, particularly when accompanied by the implication that serious meditators need to abandon their spiritual roots to engage in meditative practice.
Nothing could be further from the truth. The meditative experience is universal. Every spiritual tradition has explored it. When we become skilled in the art of learning how to quiet ourselves, we discover new levels of inner truth, and we begin to connect with our world in amazing ways. This does not require any special beliefs; it is the natural result of one’s personal, direct experience with higher levels of awareness.
Thus, many readers have appreciated the eclectic nature of the presentation in these books. You do not have to be of a particular faith to benefit from meditation practice. Indeed, the most common experience described by meditators is that it deepens their relationship with their own root traditions, it opens their eyes to new possibilities, and it sharpens their experience of daily life in the richness of each and every moment.
I discovered soon after the initial publication of both books that they had become my teachers. Interestingly, they continue to teach me. Often when I am on retreat, I glance through one of the books and discover something I wrote ten years ago that is pertinent today. In fact, at times I am so inspired, I wonder, Who wrote that?
Part of the spiritual path is to be reminded of things we already know. We forget our lessons so easily. Life is too busy. It tends to overwhelm us. If we get caught in the swirl, we lose our balance. So, we must give ourselves an opportunity to quiet down on regular occasions, to reflect, and to remember who we are, what we are doing here, what we have promised ourselves, and where we are going. This is what meditation and self-guided retreats are all about.
The reader is invited to explore the range of opportunities for inner work. You will find that some practices are far more appealing than others. When you do, try to master greater proficiency in a few practices rather than superficial skills in many. As your practice deepens, you may want to devote an entire day or long weekend to a particular experience. This is where your spiritual practice will truly improve. A self-guided retreat can be done readily, without financial expense, by following the instructions offered in these two books.
Many blessings for success on your inner quest. The discovery of one’s personal truth remains the most exciting adventure in the history of human consciousness. Moreover, each step in this direction brings the world closer to its ultimate potential. May you add your own insights to this path, a path clearly marked by the efforts of untold numbers of spiritual adventurers over thousands of years. Welcome.

This is often done at considerable personal sacrifice and with little monetary gain because of the belief that it is important to assure the dissemination of these wisdom teachings. As a result, the average person today has at her or his fingertips more resources for spiritual development than ancient kings, emperors, or even erudite scholars of the last century.

At the sound of the evening bell, newly arrived retreatants begin to file into the large meditation hall. There are many familiar faces in the crowd, meditators I have seen on numerous retreats over the years. A large number of the retreatants are themselves well-known teachers of meditation.
Compared to many of the people in this room, I am still a beginner. Although I have a dozen years of meditation experience and have accumulated thousands of hours on retreat, some of the people here have been retreating many times each year for over thirty or forty years, Yet I have never met anyone who was arrogant about his or her meditative skills. Spiritual retreat is a humbling practice. Indeed, teachers who have been around the longest say that we are all beginners.
One of the main Burmese teachers in the Vipassanā* (a Buddhist school) lineage is here in the West to guide a two-month silent retreat. This retreat was fully booked with over one hundred participants before it was even announced in the newsletter.
The organizers of this retreat have laughingly referred to it as the summit.
There have probably never before been so many meditation teachers from around the world gathered together in one place for such a long period of time. Other people, like me, heard about this through the grapevine, and registered more than six months ago. We will spend more than a thousand hours together in total silence, never even looking at each other. The prospect of working with this meditation master in a highly disciplined practice drew people like bees to honey.
These were notes I made while awaiting the welcoming talk on the opening night of an exceptional sixty-day retreat in Barre, Massachusetts. Despite the fact that this was a Buddhist-oriented program, there were people from many religious traditions: a Jesuit monk, a Benedictine who sometimes sat in his robes, a few priests and nuns, a student of Sufism, a teacher in the Hindu lineage, and quite a few Jews. A fair number of the retreatants considered themselves Buddhists, but many others, like myself, frequently use the format of a disciplined retreat to intensify practices that have other roots. Many of us have discovered that deep meditation on extended retreat opens wondrous gates.
Most of the participants came from states around the nation, but many had traveled from abroad. I remember smiling when I heard that a fellow had come from Kathmandu. I could not help but think about all the people who travel to India in the quest for enlightenment, while the man from Kathmandu came to a small town in Massachusetts for a Buddhist retreat. Other nations represented included Germany, Scandinavia, England, Australia, Vietnam, Burma, Thailand, Argentina, and South Africa. My wife and I had come from Jerusalem.
Our daily schedule was simple but austere. We alternated sitting and walking meditation each hour. The first official meditation of each day began at 5:30 A.M., but many people started much earlier. The last sit of the day finished at 10:00 P.M., but, again, many remained in the large, darkened meditation hall until past midnight. I usually began my retreat days between 3:00 and 4:00 A.M.
Eating was also a silent meditation. We maintained mindfulness while lifting and lowering our spoons, chewing, or swallowing. The only time we spoke was when we reported to one of the teachers about our meditation experience. The teachers did not want to know so much about our inner visions, flashing lights, or conversations with angelic beings—those are ordinary fantasies. They were much more interested in how we were dealing with pain or how well we noticed the minute details of the rising and falling of our chests as our breath entered and left our bodies.
My wife, Shoshana, sat on the other side of the large hall. We were prepared not to speak, or even make eye contact, for two months. We had separate sleeping accommodations. The year before this, we had completed forty days of silence in the same retreat center. We have always had good communication, but that forty-day period added a remarkable new depth to our relationship—so much can be said in silence.
During our previous retreat, and at this one as well, Shoshana and I cheated
a little on Friday evenings. In the Jewish tradition, just before sundown on Friday is the time of lighting the Sabbath candles. Thus, once each week, we met silently in the corner of the dining room to do our little ritual. After lighting, we passed our hands over the flames, gathered the light into our hearts, covered our eyes, and said a silent prayer, just as we do every Sabbath. When we finished, during the first moments after we uncovered our eyes, we sometimes caught a glance, a slight smile, a moment of bonding. This was our only communication for the entire week.
Near the end of these retreats Shoshana quietly returned to my room a few Friday evenings after candle lighting to join me for the traditional blessings over wine and bread. We used grape juice in place of wine because of retreat rules against drugs and intoxicants. We ate in silence, and although we ached to caress each other, we held fast to the house rule of the retreat center—no sex.
A few other couples were also on this retreat, but many of the retreatants had spouses at home watching the kids. I think someone came who did half of the retreat and then changed places so the spouse could attend the other half. People with families find ways to attend such retreats.
At the end of the two months, there was a three-day program designed for younger people, and many of the retreatants’ children came at that time. We usually think of retreat as a lone endeavor, but it can also be a family experience.
Retreatants have filled the room. They entered quietly in bare feet or in stockings, carrying cushions as though they were comfortable, old friends. The hall was set up with mats aligned eight abreast in fourteen rows. After seating themselves, many people threw a shawl or blanket over their shoulders. This act accentuated the feeling for me that each person spun a cocoon of personal solitude in the midst of the crowd. They could dwell in this solitude until the end of the retreat.
There were about an equal number of men and women. This was an interesting and diverse group, many of whom had to make a considerable effort to set aside two months from their professional careers. Shoshana arrived a couple of days before the retreat began. I had a few weeks head start because I wanted to do an individual twenty-day retreat before the major event. I was fortunate to have extra time for integration so that I could maximize the two-month intensive. This had become my world already, complete in its simplicity.
Not long ago, a meditation teacher told the story of his return from an extended retreat in Southeast Asia. Entering the United States, an official at passport control asked him what he had been doing, and he replied that he was just returning from a long retreat. The official said, Welcome back to the real world.
What is the real world? When we sit quietly, we discover that everything we thought was real is actually insubstantial. Under close scrutiny, everyday reality collapses into itself. What remains is something quite different from our initial concepts. Moreover, when we sit on an intensive retreat, the external reality often becomes a vague and dim parody of life compared with the vibrancy of our expanded inner vision. Which one is real?
People go on retreat to uncover a new perception, a way of seeing things as they are, rather than as they seem to be. In this environment, people often link together in an unspoken bond, never looking at or speaking to one another, yet concentrated in a unified endeavor to gain insight into the workings of their individual minds. They are there to master what is known in the meditation world as monkey mind.
The retreatants have all arrived and are seated on their mats waiting for the appearance of the teacher. There have been a few silent acknowledgments, but the room is still. The rustling noises of people settling on their cushions has stopped and now not even a whisper breaks the silence. Almost everyone has begun to meditate.
If this had been an average gathering of retreatants there might have been the fidgeting that accompanies our sense of waiting for something to happen. Most of us believe that a retreat begins when the master enters, or a meditation starts when the bell rings. Some of these more experienced retreatants, however, seem to be meditating even as they walk into the hall, long before they sit down. For them, this is simply an ongoing practice that began long ago. These more experienced meditators and teachers are influencing the rest of us without speaking a word. This is going to be a splendid retreat.
