    What is the Mediterranean diet?

The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don’t want, drink what you don’t like, and do what you’d rather not.

    Mark Twain, Author, Lecturer, Humorist

The countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea have long impressed the Western world through breakthroughs in philosophy, culture, religion, politics, and science. But now, they are putting the whole world in fascination as science draws a direct connection between what is known as the Mediterranean diet and the lower risk and incidence of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, Alzheimer’s disease, and obesity.

The name Mediterranean originates from the Latin word mediterraneus which means "in the middle of the land". The Mediterranean Sea is recognized for its important role in the flourishing of modern civilization. The sea joins the Black Sea and Sea of Marmara in the east, and the Atlantic Ocean in the west. Twenty-one coastal countries border the Sea: Albania, Algeria, Croatia, Egypt, France, Greece, Israel, Italy, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Spain, the State of Palestine, Syria, Tunisia, and Turkey. It served as an important path for merchants and travelers in the ancient times. It was, and probably still is, one of the primary sources of food of the civilizations that flourished around it.

The Mediterranean Sea is considered as a biodiversity hotspot—accommodating around 700 marine species, most of them indigenous. The Mediterranean region is a cradle of staples like figs, mandarins, hazelnuts, grapes, chickpeas, and olives. The region also credits its rocky, coastal terrain for healthy meat sources such as chicken, sheep, and lamb.

Ancel Keys, an American scientist, first brought Mediterranean diet in Pioppi, Italy 1945. However, it was not until the 1990s that the public and medical community fully embraced the Mediterranean diet’s importance and benefits. Despite the name, the Mediterranean diet is not a complete representation of authentic Mediterranean cuisine. For instance, in Israel, Malta, and Egypt, use of olive oil is inessential; in Northern Italy, olive oil is for salad and cooked vegetables only. According to Dr. Walter Willett of Harvard University's School of Public Health, this diet is based on "food patterns typical of Crete, much of the rest of Greece, and southern Italy in the early 1960s."

The Mediterranean diet stresses the importance of daily consumption of whole-grain cereals, fresh fruits, vegetables and legumes; olive oil as the main source of fat; limited intake of dairy products; moderate consumption
