The Devil's Chessboard: Allen Dulles, the CIA, and the Rise of America's Secret Government | Summary

About this ebook
The Devil’s Chessboard is a well-researched, insightful read into the life and legacy of Allen Dulles and the CIA. It gives numerous examples of how Dulles was not simply content to stay on American soil to fulfill American interests. As the director and founder of the CIA, Dulles exerts enormous power and influence over the nations of the world by successfully removing and installing puppet governments. Talbots offers an interesting background on Dulles, from his childhood as the son of Reverend Allen Macy Dulles to his relationship with his wife, Clover, and long-time mistress, Mary Bancroft. From the descriptions of family and friends, Dulles is described as a man who appeared indifferent to the suffering of others. He deemed people important only when he found them “useful” and was quick to dismiss them when they were not. This is a summary and analysis of the book and NOT the original book

Prologue
The book begins with a conversation between Willie Morris, an editor at Harper’s magazine, and Allen Dulles that takes place in the summer of 1965.
Who is this Allen Dulles you may ask, and why would this statement carry such weight coming from him. Well, Allen Dulles created the CIA and he wanted Morris to write an article that would vindicate him and tell his side of the story about the failed Bay of Pigs invasion. This scandal had weighed on Dulles for many years and he referred to it as, the blackest day of my life.

While publicly, the President, John F. Kennedy took responsibility for the failure of the Bay of Pigs, behind the scenes Dulles and Kennedy were at odds. They both approached this conflict with different motivations for its success. Dulles saw its success as another defeat of the devil and communism.
