PREFACE
In the new millennium, getting a premier job with longevity and career growth opportunities in a profitable company has never been more difficult. We live in a world now where access to information has become virtually unlimited. The internet and social media are now the foremost sources for news, entertainment, and information. In the same way, companies today have a wide array of resources for recruiting and hiring when they need to fill vacancies. Competition for good jobs has never been more fierce. In a lot of cases, if you don’t have an in,
or know someone already working for the company you want to work for, it’s almost impossible to get an interview let alone get in the door. It’s well documented that most good jobs are attained by people who know someone in the industry or organization they aspire to work for. Companies have come to realize that their own employees are a great resource for the types of candidates they are looking for. Many companies will pay bonuses to employees if someone they refer is hired. As a result, sometimes people get jobs they didn’t deserve, just by virtue of their connections with family members and friends.
Companies are also looking for candidates to fill vacancies that have experience in the field they do business. This makes the prospect of getting an interview and getting hired, all the more difficult for the graduating college student. For a college student with no referral and no experience, the task of having a company or recruiter to consider them for a position becomes extremely difficult if not impossible.
Most employers look for experience and Fortune 500 companies realize that good talent is hard to find. Employers, recruiters, and hiring managers(from here on referred to as the HM) also realize that when they find talented individuals, getting them to stay with the company for an extended period of time(10-20 years) is difficult. Employers want to hire someone who has experience in the field as well as an individual that is willing to make a long term commitment to their organization. The HM will look for candidates that share their company’s values and will display loyalty by not jumping ship to another company who comes along and offers slightly more money or benefits.
This puts the college graduate(from here on referred to as the CG) at a big disadvantage. The typical CG usually doesn’t have any of the previously mentioned attributes. The HM realizes that it could be a long time before a 22 year old is likely to display the fundamental traits they are looking for. By hiring a CG, the company is taking a BIG risk on a young and unproven candidate. They will be investing heavily in the training program for a new hire. Depending on the industry, these costs can run into the many thousands of dollars. Not to mention multiple days and productivity missed spent
