    Charlie walked through the crowd of orphans gathered at Mrs. Daye’s door and peered through the door.

    You called me, Mrs. Daye?

    Yes, darling, please do come in.

    Crossing the threshold, she entered the office for the third time since she found herself at the Daye orphanage.

    Mrs. Daye had been the kindest foster mother she had had yet, but many of the scars she had borne from her past homes still lingered in her mind.

    She had never expected that being 10 years old would have been this hard. She had experienced more pain than happiness in her life but her mother’s demise and leaving her with no caretaker had been the worst yet.

    Growing up, she had known she was going to live a hard life. Her mother had been sick all the time. She had never known her father or any other family figure except her mother.

    In the office, she was surprised to see a pair of new faces smiling at her.

    Charlie, these are the Hudsons, Mrs Daye introduced.

    Charlie looked over at the couple standing in the corner. The lady wore a pink cashmere cardigan over a tweed dress and a string of iridescent pearl necklace with matching earrings. The man beside her wore an expensive-looking dark blue suit and brown leather shoes. They looked like they were in their 40s.

    Surely they had no interest in adoption. People like them were beyond capable of having babies as beautiful as themselves.

    Hi, she whispered, staring at the floor.
