Chapter 1
His name was Tom Sawyer. He was a young boy growing up in the village of St. Petersberg, located in the state of Georgia. He lived in a small house with his Auntie Polly and his brother Sydney. Tom didn’t like his older brother because Sydney was always getting him into trouble. He stole sugar cubes from the table which Tom was often blamed for. Then the night before Sydney ratted out his only brother for playing hooky. The only thing he didn’t like more than school was being caught for skipping school. Sydney noticed the button on Tom’s shirt had a different thread sewn into it and he promptly pointed it out to grandma, who remembered as well and Tom’s goose was cooked. If they only knew why Tom needed to sew the button back on, he would have been in even more trouble. Yet there Tom was, roasting in the hot Georgian sun and whitewashing the fence on a Saturday morning. He didn’t want to be there, working on the long fence which was likely going to take all day to finish. Tom started to wash the fence one long board at a time.

Tom was not amused as he watched the young boy came closer, making loud sounds, impersonating the Big Missouri. Ben stopped what he was doing when he saw Tom working on the fence. You’re up a stump, ain’t you?
he called out.
Tom didn’t respond, refusing to take his eye off the work before him.
Ben came in closer. Been put to work, hey?
Tom finally stopped washing. It’s you Ben, I didn’t see you.
I’m going swimming.
Ben gloated. I bet you wish you were too instead of working here.
Working where?
Tom asked.
Well, here!
Ben answered. Isn’t this work?
Maybe it is, maybe it isn’t.
Tom said with a grin. All I know is that it suits Tom Sawyer.
Come on!
Ben called back in disbelief. You can’t honestly tell me you like it?
Tom didn’t answer but instead kept brushing the fence, never taking his eyes off it and looking for small imperfections like a skilled artist. He even started to hum a tune, giving Ben the impression that he was having a great time.
Ben stood there for a few
