About this ebook
"To stand at the foot of the cross is to witness the purpose for which God created the world."
The cross is a wonder unfathomable. Time cannot contain its reach. No heart can endure its weight. And yet it is the center of everything. It cannot be passed over.
Pastor and author Erwin W. Lutzer believes that the better we grasp what the cross meant to Christ, the better we grasp what it should mean to us. To do this, Lutzer examines Jesus’ cries from the cross.
Search with him and see how God’s love and justice meet. Know the weight of sin and the power of redemption. Look upon Jesus in His weakness, obedience, sorrow, and compassion. Let the scandal of the cross give you pause.
The cross deserves our attention. Journey forth into the heart of Jesus, that your own heart may be shaped to His.

Cries from the Cross - Erwin W. Lutzer
Praise for Cries from the Cross
The crucifixion of Jesus Christ brings us face to face with two seemingly contrary attributes of God—His love and His wrath, with two seemingly contradictory doctrines—the sovereignty of God and the free will of man. Once we understand Calvary, we can understand what it is to deny ourselves, take up our cross daily and follow Him. This is a work we should all read.
—KAY ARTHUR, Precept Ministries
With his unique insights and careful devotion to the text, Erwin Lutzer takes us deep into the mysteries of the incarnation, no more powerfully revealed than in our Lord’s seven statements from the cross. This is not just compelling reading; this is divinely profound truth.
—JOHN MACARTHUR, Grace Community Church
Cries from the Cross is truly a journey into the heart of Jesus. It has always been difficult for me to read the words of Jesus from the cross without being overwhelmed by the great love He expressed in His dying moments. You owe it to yourself to read it. Your devotional life will never be the same!

PREFACE
There is a story about a pilgrim making his way to the Promised Land. He was carrying his master’s cross, a burden he cheerfully accepted. However, he soon noticed that the farther he walked, the heavier it became. As the pilgrim became weary, he sat down to rest and noticed a woodsman nearby. Good Friend,
the pilgrim called, could I use your axe to shorten my cross?
The woodsman complied.
The pilgrim traveled on, making much progress. His cross was shorter, his burden lighter. Soon the Promised Land was in sight. Drawing near, however, he noticed that a deep gulf separated him from the glories beyond. He would use the cross to span the chasm.
Though he struggled mightily to lay the cross across the deep rift, it fell short by the very amount he had cut off. Just then the pilgrim awoke; it was a dream. And now, with tears streaming down his face, he clutched his cross to his breast and pressed on. The cross was just as heavy, but now he bore it with more joy. He would endure, all the way to the Promised Land.
Of course we do not enter heaven because we carry a heavy cross but by trusting Christ alone for our salvation. But that said, we as the redeemed are called to carry our cross if we are to have an abundant entrance into the Heavenly Realms. Blessed are those who carry its full weight.
A. W. Tozer was right when he said, That part of us that we rescue from the cross is the seat of our troubles.
The part of the cross we refuse to carry is the part that makes us ineffective for the kingdom of God. The lighter our cross, the weaker our witness.
This book is written with the conviction that the better we grasp what the cross meant to Christ, the better we will understand what the cross should mean to us. We shall learn that for Him the cross meant something quite different from the sentimental notions that often accompany an icon worn around our necks. To stand at the foot of the cross is to witness the purpose for which God created the world. Here we see the attributes of God on display; and if we look carefully, we will see ourselves, with all of our needs, sins, and self-deceptions. Thankfully, it is at the cross that God chose to remove His wrath from those who would humbly trust Christ as their sin-bearer.
No one feels qualified to write a book on the cross. I undertook this task knowing full well that I could only probe the mystery, not fathom it. I could ponder the words of Jesus, but only faintly grasp what they meant to Him in the hour of His suffering. I could visualize the scene, but I struggled to search out its meaning. Thankfully, partial knowledge is still true knowledge; we do not have to understand everything in order to understand something. Thus, any study of the cross brings great personal rewards.
Many of the ideas presented here were derived from my study of other books that have contributed to my understanding of the Seven Sayings of Jesus. I’m indebted to men such as Arthur Pink, Charles Spurgeon, and John Stott, to name a few. A sermon series delivered at Moody Church by Pastor Warren Wiersbe back in 1978 also gave me additional insights, many of which are included. I can only hope that I have paid adequate tribute to these and other men, knowing that in some instances the sources for my ideas may have been either overlooked or forgotten. A book is actually the sum total of inspiration and thoughts derived from years of thought and study.
This book is offered to you as a gift from my heart to yours. If you should find yourself blessed, encouraged, and challenged, the thanks goes to the One who is most worthy of praise. And they sang a new song, saying: ‘You are worthy to take the scroll and to open its seals, because you were slain, and with your blood you purchased for God persons from every tribe and language and people and nation. You have made them to be a kingdom and priests to serve our God, and they will reign on the earth’
(Revelation 5:9–10 NIV).
We join our voices with Fanny Crosby:
Jesus, keep me near the cross,
There a precious fountain
Free to all—a healing stream,
Flows from Calvary’s mountain.
In the cross, in the cross,
Be my glory ever;
Till my raptured soul shall find
Rest beyond the river.¹

A JOURNEY INTO THE HEART OF JESUS
And when they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe and put his own clothes on him and led him away to crucify him.
—MATTHEW 27:31
Were you there when they crucified my Lord?"
As a child I wondered what those words could possibly mean. Obviously, the author of the hymn intended that we answer yes to the question. And yet, what could be clearer than the fact that I was not there when they crucified my Lord? I was born centuries after Jesus died; I missed the event by two millennia. Nor was I there when they laid Him in the tomb
and when He rose up from the grave.
Yet, as I have grown in my understanding of the faith, I realize that I was there. In fact, if I had not been there, I would not be redeemed. For it was on Calvary that
