Foreword
As a reader of this book, you must have been serious about transforming your serves, perhaps trying to outmaneuver your peers in that tenacious rivalry at a local club. Or is it just simply because you’re looking to hand your son or daughter the most important weaponry available in tennis so he or she can become the next iconic figure of this sport? Whether your search is for your own benefit or for your loved ones, I’ve got good news for you: You’ve found the right resource! With this book, I can say with certainty that your serves will improve, especially your second serve. Would that make you a better player, as assured by the famous saying you’re only as good as your second serve? We will find out by the end of this book.
Knowing how important the second serve is to the game of tennis, I didn’t stop searching or contemplating, spending hours, days, and yes, literally, years on the practice court until I conquered this stroke, which at first seems insurmountable. Well, my tennis friends, let me tell you the good news: The beast has been tamed. And that’s the reason for the existence of this book.
If I had an option to trade in all other shots in exchange for just one shot, I would choose a perfect second serve over anything else. That’s a bold statement, isn’t it, proclaiming how important the second serve is. Well, it is. The second serve is more than just a start of a tennis game, it’s a measuring metric of your tennis IQ. It says a lot about your knowledge of the game. By conquering and owning this shot, you must have gained a wealth of profound knowledge about sweet spot, spin, power, curve, round object rotation, snap, pronation, pronating path, transformation of energy, friction, self-induced curve, externally applied curve, steering, and more. Missing any of the aforementioned pieces, you wouldn’t be able to generate a perfect second serve. That’s why You are only as good as your second serve.
If secrets are meant to be kept, why share? If you had asked me a couple of months ago how much I would price this book, I would have told you without hesitation that it was worth thousands of dollars. True, the initial intent was for my family’s inner circle only. Secrets to be kept for my two kids, who are now adolescents aged nine and twelve years old, perfect for tennis starters. However, one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. Mine is the other way around. A parent’s dream can be a child’s nightmare. Currently, my children are not showing signs of interest in tennis. I don’t want to let my dreams go to waste. I want to pass them on to those in need and to those who will cherish these secrets as treasures, willing to make the most of them. That’s why this book. And the secrets will be unveiled in the latter chapters.
A couple of years ago, as I embarked on the quest to conquer the second serve
journey, I stumbled across the web, searching every corner for answers. Not all solutions are created equal. There are a lot of myths out there still, unfortunately, about keys to unlocking the secrets behind the second serve. The existence of such myths indicates the degree of difficulties in a second serve. If it were simple, then there would be no myths. The mere fact that myths exist speaks volumes about the mysteriousness of a second serve, and it seems as if no one holds the key to unlocking its mystery. I searched for answers to no avail, and the mystery persisted. I watched numerous analyses and tons of YouTube videos which tried to unveil the secrets, but found none to my satisfaction.
For example, the many so-called solutions to the second serve (a.k.a. kick serve) seem to point to a technique that requires a server to brush up from underneath the ball starting at seven o’clock to two o’clock,
as if the ball is a 2-D circle, like a clock. Other analysts say the added power and spin actually come from the turning of the server’s hips, whose trophy
