About this ebook

When the Incan Mother Earth goddess heals you, it shouldn’t be all that surprising to suddenly find yourself with supernatural powers... whether you asked for them or not!

Annie Birch is a smart, sophisticated lady at the beginning of a glittering legal career. Already involved in high-profile cases at her partnership, everything that she’s familiar with and working towards is about to get sucked up into the kind of story only the guiltiest of clients might concoct.

As Annie tries to control her new teleportation power and deal with the unexpected pair of drop-dead gorgeous admirers beating down her door, she has a choice to make. She can ignore her superhero-like powers—and maybe condemn the world—while continuing her career...

...or she can embrace the powers that Mother Earth breathed into her and take the road less traveled on a thrilling, but dangerous journey with the most desirable man she has ever laid eyes on.

Annie’s Defiance is Book 3 in Nicole Pouchet’s paranormal romance / magical realism series, Elemental Myths. The series explores a world where humanity isn’t alone—but locked in a hidden battle with its origins in Incan mythology. Liu’s Dirk and Steele series thanks to its expert storytelling and gripping narratives.

    Annie’s Defiance

D.C. lawyer, Annie Birch, believes her life is one logical assessment after another. That changes, however, on the day she accidentally teleports during a high-profile negotiation. Knowing her new power must be a side effect after miraculously getting healed by the Incan Mother Earth goddess doesn’t help matters. Annie has already seen how emerging powers like hers also come with psycho villains that are bent on destroying her, as well as the corporeal world.

The icing on the cupcake of her ridiculous day is two gorgeous men who show up on her doorstep, both vying for her attention. Now, her choices involve much more than her oft-neglected libido. Annie is tasked to play a role in the Incan prophecy, which she prefers to watch from the sidelines. Will she stick to her safe, legal path? Or will she defy all logic to experience the decidedly more fun adventures being thrust her way?

    Advance Praise

Publishers Weekly says Nicole Pouchet provides an intriguing blend of the earthly and supernatural worlds with emotional telepathy, reincarnation, superhero-like powers, and explosive carnal energy… Lively, flirtatious characters make this an appealing romance.

    Chapter One

Her four-inch Manolo Blahniks clicking with every step, Annie Birch kept her pace at an acceptably brisk walk as she navigated the law firm’s hallways and returned to her office.

As soon as Annie rounded the final corner, Mrs. Johnson stood up and walked around her executive desk, which was parked just outside Annie’s private office door.

Anne? The elderly African-American woman shook her head. I already got a call that you left the negotiation without any explanation. Now you know you’ve got to treat folks better than that; even if your client won’t cough up the money.

Annie smiled through a wave of dizziness that threatened to whisk her away. I know… Gimme a few minutes. I need time to regroup. She kicked off her shoes after she stepped onto the plush, oversized rug in her private office and closed the door, sealing Mrs. Johnson out.

The dizziness increased. Not again, she thought. Having a shiny, new superpower was great if she were starring in one of those silly sci-fi flicks that her former roommate was always watching; but in reality… What if she had disappeared in front of her clients and opposing counsel? She would surely lose her job—or worse—if she couldn’t get herself under control.

Maybe meditation would help. Thinking of her happy place, she grabbed onto the corner of her desk to steady herself. Taking a deep breath, she imagined the sun warming her face and a light breeze brushing her blond hair across her cheeks. The Washington Monument on a warm spring day, a symbol of power and good will in the heart of her chosen hometown city. Breathe in. You can do this.

The room took a final, lurching spin and she closed her eyes to concentrate. Then blessedly, it righted itself. Annie sighed her relief. Yeah! Just a few weeks in, and she could already control these new powers! Of course, she could. She was a brilliant, beautiful, talented woman who could do anything she put her mind to. Her mother certainly said that to her enough times. She laughed softly to herself as she opened her eyes. She’d better not waste any time getting back to the negoti—

Dammit! Annie whirled around, gasping as she observed her new surroundings. A second ago, she was in her office; and now, she was standing outside the freaking Monument! And it really was the sun beating down on her. She’d sifted space again. But this time was so much worse than the other times. The other few times when she sifted space, she merely went from her bedroom to the kitchen because she was hungry, or from her couch to her bed when she got sleepy. She naturally assumed her burgeoning travel powers were confined to the same building. So she fully expected to end up in the bathroom, or a random office of the law firm, when that familiar dizziness started. How stupid! Her initial assessment of the magnitude of her powers was based on very thin evidence, she realized as she stood in the grass.

Smacking a stone pedestal nearby, she wondered, What the hell do I do now?

Are you well, miss? A deep voice interrupted her panic.

She looked up into gorgeous, slate-blue eyes. Bronzed skin and wavy, chestnut hair that fell down to his broad shoulders, the man staring at her looked like a rogue underwear model. Or maybe an ancient statue miraculously brought to life. Yep, he was one of those way-too-handsome-to-exist-in-reality men. This was so not the time to meet a dreamy character. She had to get back to work despite all the butterflies that began flipping around in her stomach.

I’m fine, thank you. She gave a quick smile and started to walk away.

He visibly assessed her without shame. No, I don’t think you’re well at all. You’re wearing no shoes. May I assist?

Gathering her wits, she strove to ignore the undeniable attraction that was physically pulling her in his direction. After all, she was the lawyer, the one who made assessments for a living. Reliable and level-headed, she was the one who invariably bailed friends and family out of bad situations. She had to figure out how to get back to her office without depending on this beautiful man with an accent that she couldn’t quite place; and a body so yummy, she could trace the outlines of his pecs through his clingy, white shirt. No, truly, she replied, hiding her disorientation as she glanced around the Monument. I’ll just hail a taxi back to my office. As soon as I figure out which direction that is. I’m fine.

He narrowed his eyes. "How did you
