Chapter 1:
Getting to Know Italy
Italy is truly a plethora of gothic and classical architectures, majestic castles, crystal clear beaches, breathtaking coastlines, huge cathedrals, scenic villages, and UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Wherever you go in Italy, there will always be a place that will absolutely captivate you. You will find that special place that you will miss the most when you go back home and a place that you will always long to go back to. Italy is a small country, but it surely is a big collection of beautiful places.
Italy is a country in the southern part of the European continent that is bordered by four major countries, namely Switzerland, Austria, Slovenia and France, on the north. The southern part of the country is mostly surrounded by the sea. It is fairly a mountainous area, with the highest peak belonging to Monte Bianco, that is surrounded by the Po River, Italy’s largest river, and four major seas, namely Adriatic Sea, Ligurian Sea, Ionian Sea, Tyrrhenian Sea. As you read along, you will find out how these various land and water forms contribute to Italy’s fast growing economy and tourism.
Italy has four major divisions, namely the North, Central, and South Italy and the Islands. These four major divisions are further subdivided into regions. North Italy has eight regions; the Central has four; the South is composed of six regions, and the two Islands, Sardinia and Sicily. Each region of Italy is an art in itself, holding in its bosom several museums, parks, and unique landmarks that will make each of them unforgettable.
The beauty of Italy has never been a secret to the world. Almost everyone would be familiar with Rome and its intricately-designed cathedrals, Venice and its stunning canals and bridges, Florence and its grand palaces, and of course, Milan and its magnificent theatres. However, there are other places in Italy that are waiting for your discovery. This is the time to look beyond Rome, Milan, Florence, Venice and Naples. It’s time to broaden your exploration and learn more about what Italy has to offer.
Rome is the capital of Italy and, for a long time, it has been the center of Christianity. As you take a stroll around the country’s capital, you would see a lot of cathedrals and basilicas whose architectural designs are as diverse and artistic as the cultures that define Italy. Because of its strategic location, Italy’s economy had risen to great heights, especially during the 11th century.
More than half of the lands of the country are used for agricultural purposes. This includes vineyards, wineries, and plains used for the cultivation of rice, pumpkins and other products. This is mainly the reason behind Italy’s finest and tastiest wines and superb cuisines. Thanks to Italy’s long stretch of coastlines and high mountains, the climate of the country varies throughout the country and throughout the year, with most of it being humid subtropical.
Italy remains beautiful despite the changing seasons. The snow-covered Alps and mountains make a great skiing ground. The pine trees and the flowers in various gardens bloom to give the surroundings color during spring. The autumn leaves that line the roads make a perfect background for some picnics. And summer, of course, is the perfect time to feel the lovely Italian waters and for some great outdoor activities.
Most of Italy’s regions are easily accessible, thanks to its excellent transportation system. You can hop on the fastest train in the country, called the NTV, running for approximately 220 miles per hour, and hop off at almost any region you want to visit. Except for certain provinces in the Northern Italy, most provinces in the country are accessible by car and train. Some provinces are better reached by boats, or, if you want to enjoy the nature, you can follow the walking trails to reach your destination. If you are travelling from another country, you can choose to land on any of the 30 major airports in the country. The two main airports are located in Milan and in Rome.
Because of the various groups of people that inhabited Italy in the olden times, the country’s architecture does not only reflect certain periods, such as Renaissance and Medieval periods,
