    Excellent book on the mudras. It's very insightful on how mudras work and the mudras different facets. It covers mudras from a more ayurvedic perspective which I liked alot.

Mudra Therapy

Mudra Therapy is a non-medical mode of treatment which helps without harming.  Mudras (more precisely 'Hasta-mudras') are various postures of fingers and thumbs. In Mudra Therapy, different diseases are treated by holding and retaining the fingers and the thumbs in different ways.

This simple measure surprisingly restores a state of balance (homoeostasis) within the body and raises the level of the performer's resistance. With the patient's immunity thus strengthened, the disease has no other option but to flee.

Mudra Therapy is advantageous in a number of ways:

  It is very simple, perhaps the simplest among different non-medical therapies.

  Mudras are quite easy to perform. Barring a few people who have stiff/arthritic fingers, most others can practice them without any difficulty.

  It is an extremely gentle form of treatment. Therefore, at times, the patient's recovery from illness might seem somewhat slow. However, its efficacy is beyond doubt. Remember: slow and steady wins the race!

  It is entirely safe since no chemical medicines are employed.

  Mudra Therapy is inexpensive (in fact free) because no gadgets or instruments are required.

  As far as medical therapies are concerned, the patient is reduced to a mute spectator in the process of treatment; in Mudra Therapy he is promoted to the role of an active participant!

  Mudra Therapy has a preventive aspect, too. Any person who analyses and understands his temperament and his bodily constitution (on the basis of a table given in the next chapter) can realize what ailments he is susceptible to and can, then, regularly practice certain mudras to prevent those susceptibilities from manifesting into overt illnesses.
